This weekend: Celebrate National Trails Day

On the Appalachian Trail, on the way to Grassy Ridge.

National Trails Day is non-denominational: you can celebrate on a paddle trail, a bike trail or a hiking trail. Come one, come all.

Coast

Most ranger-led paddle trips are quick one-hour affairs. This Saturday at Lake Waccamaw State Park you’ll have a full half day to explore this Carolina Bay in the wake of a knowledgeable lead. The paddle starts at 10 a.m.

Logistics: Free, but preregistration is required, by calling 910.646.4748. Learn more about the lake and the park here.

Saturday forecast: Partly cloudy early, then clear. High of 82.

Piedmont

A half day of paddling awaits at Lake Waccamaw.

Saturday is National Trails Day, and as we noted yesterday there are 29 events officially registered in North Carolina. One of the most wide-reaching is the National Trails Day Festival in  Greensboro, at Bur-Mil Park. Guided hikes, guided bike rides, guided paddle trips, kids stuff, workshops, music, food — it’s pretty much got it all. Starts early (7 a.m.), ends before it gets too nasty out (1 p.m.).

Logistics: 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Go here for more details and directions.

Saturday forecast: Cloudy early, then clearing. High of 75.

Mountains

We’ll go with National Trails Day again in the mountains, this time a hike up

Paddling near Bur-Mil Park.

to 6,189-foot Grassy Ridge along the Appalachian Trail near Carver’s Gap. One of the best hikes around, mostly exposed (crossing two balds to get to Grassy Ridge) and very mountain meadowlike.

Logistics: Gather in Burnsville at 9 a.m. to take public transportation up to Carver’s Gap ($5). Return to Burnsville around 3 p.m. Sponsored by the NC High Peaks Trail Association, where you can go for more information.

Saturday forecast: Clear early, trending to partly cloudy. High of 77.
