90 Second Escape: Ultimate Hike

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.

Today’s 90-Second Escape: The Ultimate Hike

This weekend I got to experience what is, for me, becoming an annual event: helping a group of incredibly motivated hikers cover 28.3 miles — in one day — on the challenging Foothills Trail of North and South Carolina. These are not extreme hikers; in fact, some hadn’t stepped foot on a trail before joining the Ultimate Hike program sponsored by CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. (In a nutshell, CureSearch raises money to help fight, in various ways, children’s cancer.) But they are among the most driven hikers you will meet. Driven by what is, for most, a previously unimaginable physical challenge. Driven by the desire to help cancer’s youngest victims.
I’ll be back tomorrow to talk more about CureSearch and the Ultimate Hike. Today, take 90 seconds to escape the rain and snow to take a mid-fall hike, the Ultimate Hike, on the Foothills Trail.
