90 Second Escape: Into the Clouds (atop Shining Rock)

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.

Today’s 90-Second Escape: Into the Clouds (at Shining Rock)

One of the joys of mountain hiking in summer is that period before an afternoon storm hits. The thunderheads start building, clouds start rolling in, the terrain lazily slips in and out of the shadows. It’s especially enjoyable if it’s a slow-moving storm system that gives you plenty of time to enjoy the prelims — then get down the mountain before the show begins.

I had such an opportunity last week in the Shining Rock area of western North Carolina. Tag along for 90 seconds of an afternoon spent in a slowly developing storm system.
