GetOut! Your Nudge for Weekend Adventure

Friday might be dicey over much of the GetGoingNC universe weatherize, but the weekend itself isn’t looking too shabby. Not a bad weekend, for instance, for the following:

Lassiter Swamp Canoe Trip, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Merchants Millpond State Park, Gatesville. Usually when we think about paddling the millpond at this state park nestled in the northeast part of the state, we think of a leisurely hour or so on the water. Not with this adventure, which paddles deep into the swamp for lunch, then continues on to “the big tree.” A six-hour tour. Bring your lunch — and a pair of knee boots. Learn more here,

Sunday Morning Birds, Sunday, 8 a.m., Eno River State Park, Durham. Love the idea of getting up and out early, but need a little encouragement? How about the chance to go on a birding outing? It’s free, but you need to do a few things: 1. Wear hiking boots. 2. Wear long pants. 3. Bring water. 4. Bring binoculars. Space is limited, registration is required, by calling 919.383.1686.

Forest Wildflower Hike, Saturday, 10 a.m., Holmes Educational State Forest, Hendersonville.  The wildflowers are just beginning to burst out in bloom out west, and here’s a good opportunity to check them out with a ranger who can tell you what’s what and why. This two-hour hike will cover less than a mile, with the emphasis on looking and learning. Bring: comfortable shoes, a water bottle, a camera, and a wildflower field guide if you have one. Space is limited, registration is required, by calling 828.692.0100.

Live the video

This week’s video was shot at Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area Monday morning after a cold front moved through the Triangle. Already the highest point in the Triangle, at 867 feet, Occoneechee felt even more montane with a cool, brisk wind (which also scoured the skies, making for great views). For information on exploring Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area in Hillsborough, visit the N.C. State Parks website here.

GetOut and enjoy!
