GetHiking! Back on the Trail

GetHiking! is back!

Over the past couple of weeks, our GetHiking! groups in North Carolina and Virginia have resumed group hikes — group hikes that look a little different than they did the beginning of the year. 

“As stay-at-home orders started to relax some in the past few weeks, we have started posting some hikes again,” says Pepper Ernest, hike leader for GetHiking! Charlottesville. “I led my first hike (very small group) today and several other hike leaders have posted and led hikes over the past week.” read more

Monday, Monday: The weekend in review

Monday:  we find it hard to transition from a weekend of adventure to a workweek of … work.  So we typically find ourself easing into reality with a bit of weekend reflection. Or daydreaming as some might call it …

Today, we find ourself back on the trail at Raven Rock State Park Sunday afternoon. Now, if you were at Raven Rock around 12:30 you likely found yourself in a queue waiting to get into the popular park, which is currently limiting access due to the pandemic. That’s if you were trying to get into the main part of the park, on the south side of the Cape Fear River. Ah, but if you had been with us on the north side of the park, in the Avents Creek Access Area, you would have had far less company — and most of it four-footed. read more

This National Trails Day: Trails for All

Back in March, way back in March, the American Hiking Society faced a dilemma. National Trails Day, observed the first Saturday in June since the early 1990s, would have to look different this year.

In the past, the day was marked by hundreds of events nationwide at which people would gather to build trail, maintain trail or simply to hike. It was an opportunity to gather with others and celebrate the trails we love. It was as much about enjoying the company of fellow hikers as it was about the trail itself. read more
