You don't typically associate North Carolina with great cross-country skiing. Vermont, Wisconsin, Montana, sure. But not the Tarheel state.
Yet when we do get more than a dusting of snow, as little as six inches in some instances, some of our hiking and biking trails turn into great Nordic venues. Shoot, even one of our longest roads — the Blue Ridge Parkway — transforms into a stellar ski with enough white stuff.
When it does snow, here's a rundown of trails that make the transition quite nicely:
