Smithfield | Buffalo Creek Highlights
Length: 3.3 miles
Exploring downtown Smithfield: Smithfield on the weekends can be downright sleepy. The Howell Theatre and Ava Gardner Museum are both open (as is the public library on Market Street — until 5 p.m.!). Orchard House Booksellers at 117 N. 3rd St. is a good spot to get coffee and loll about, and there’s the Neuse Little Theatre. The town’s wide, tree-lined streets and minimal traffic enhance the experience of exploring the town’s historic homes.
Smithfield Community Park: Located at the greenway’s northern trailhead, the park has a boatload of ballfields, playground and the Smithfield Recreation & Aquatic Center with an indoor 8-lane pool, splash pool, racquetball, basketball and a bunch of other activities.
Greenway hours: 4:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. or 30 minutes after dark.
Speed limit: 10 mph
Nice touch for runners: Markers ever two-tenths of a mile.
Nice touch for everyone: The greenway crosses no streets.
Skateboards allowed? No
