Where to paddle: Winston-Salem

Uwharrie River

Paddlers in Winston-Salem are blessed with both good lake and river options nearby. Belews Lake northeast of town offers miles of open flatwater paddling while Salem Lake  has the convenience of being right in town. The Yadkin River to the west gives paddlers a big river feel, while river paddlers looking for something frisky — but not too frisky — have the option of the Dan River in the Sauratown Mountains and the Uwharrie River in the Uwharrie Mountains.
