Welcome to our expanded Winter 2020-21 Hike Series! In past years, we’ve launched our eight-hike Winter Hike Series the first Sunday of the new year. This year, because it’s more important than ever to get outside in a safe and supportive environment, we’re starting in December and conducting 12 hikes. We seek to insure your safety, while enhancing your hiking experience at the same time, by focusing on the trails less traveled, and by limiting our group size to 12 per session to accommodate social distancing. As always, we also strive to introduce you to some great trails and provide you the tools to get out and hike these trails on your own, if you choose.

What: Twelve hikes, 11 on Sundays and one on a Wednesday, on trails mostly in the Triangle.

Experience level: This hike series is geared toward hikers with some experience. That doesn’t mean you have to be fast; we lead our hikes from the rear, so no one is left behind. But these hikes do tend to be longer — from 4 to 8 miles, with most around 6 — and thus require more familiarity with hiking. If you’re new to hiking, check out our more beginner-oriented Let’s GetHiking! Welcome to Hiking series.

When: Sundays beginning Dec. 8 and running through Feb. 28. We will also have a hike on Wednesday, Dec. 30. All hikes begin at 10 a.m.

Includes: Every Wednesday you’ll receive a detailed guide for each hike, including map, route description, route overview, directions and other details about the trail. Every Friday we send a hike reminder along with a look at the weather.

Cost: $115 per hiker ($195 for couples and families; go here to register for the couples/family rate)

Where we hike

Dec. 13 Eno River State Park, Fews Ford Access, Durham. 4.2 miles on the Buckquarter Creek and Holden Mill trails (our traditional winter kick-off hike)

Dec. 20 Mountains-to-Sea Trail at Falls Lake, Day-Hike Section H, Raleigh. 6 miles. From the Shinleaf Recreation Area we hike east to NC 98, then hike back.

Dec. 30 Umstead State Park, Sycamore/Crabtree Creek Figure-8 Loop, Raleigh. 7 miles. On the Wednesday before New Years we make a rare visit to Umstead.

Jan. 3   Mountains-to-Sea Trail at Falls Lake, Day-Hike Section T, Durham. 6 miles. One of our most scenically diverse hikes, we hike east from Red Mill Road to a railroad crossing and back.

Jan. 10 Horton Grove Nature Preserve, Bahama. 7.2 miles. We’ll start from the secondary access (The Great White Barn) and hike every trail in the preserve.

Jan. 17 Mountains-to-Sea Trail at Falls Lake, Day-Hike Section S, Durham. 6.2 miles. We start again from the Red Mill Road Access, but this time hike west, to an overlook above the Eno and with winter views extending nearly to Virginia.

Jan. 24 Butner Game Lands, Bahama. 6.5 miles. From just outside the Butner Depot, we begin on a route we’ve done before, then add on a section only passable in winter which takes down to Falls Lake.

Jan. 31 Little River Regional Park, Durham/Orange county line. 4.5 miles. After an absence from our schedule, we return to Little River Regional Park for a winter ramble along the rocky Little River.

Feb. 7 Mountains-to-Sea Trail at Falls Lake, Day-Hike Section P. 5.8 miles. A flat, fast hike over mostly smooth terrain with long sight-lines in a naked winter forest.

Feb. 14 Raven Rock State Park | Avents Creek Access, Fuquay-Varina. 8 miles. On our first 4 miles (West  Loop), we enjoy surprisingly mountain-like hiking (including a waterfall). Our second 4 miles (East Loop) is more like the Piedmont.

Feb. 21 Mountains-to-Sea Trail at Falls Lake, Day-Hike Section L. 6.2 miles. From the Rollingview Access we head east to NC 98, on some of the most mellow trail in our lineup.

Feb. 28 Mountains-to-Sea Trail at Falls Lake, Day-Hike Section M. 6.6 miles. We start from the same spot we did a week earlier, but head west, over more variedterrain that includes a waterfall.
