Welcome to the second of three 2022 Summer on the MST Weekend Escapes, 22.5 miles of hiking on the MST from Graveyard Fields east to Big Ridge Overlook. Basecamp for the weekend: Mount Pisgah Campground

The Hikes

Friday evening

Where: From camp we’ll hike to the summit of 5,772-foot Mount Pisgah and back. As impressive as the view from the top is the massive 339-foot communications tower at the summit.

Distance: 4.5 miles (round trip)

Difficulty: Moderate

Where: We’ll shuttle west on the Blue Ridge Parkway, where we’ll start on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail at the edge of the Middle Prong Wilderness and hike east past Sam Knob, Black Balsam to Graveyard Fields. This high-elevation hike (it stays above 5,000 feet) has a surprising amount of exposure, offering great views, and includes a visit to Upper Falls in Graveyard Fields. A non-stop run of great Southern Appalachian scenery.

Distance: 9 miles.

Difficulty: Moderate

Where: From camp we’ll drive a short distance to Pink Beds, a rare Southern Appalachian bog (ample boardwalks elevate you above the boggier stretches). A surprisingly flat hike through hardwood, pine and rhododendron woods.

Distance: 5 miles

Difficulty: Easy
