A mellow downtown bike ride at the coast, an audience with a survivor from the days of Mary Queen of Scots and hankie hike up in the hollow. An interesting weekend of choices in North Carolina.

Coast

We love a good organized bike ride. And we have a special fondness for those that don’t cater to the hardcore cyclist capable of riding 100 miles. Or 63. Or even 25. We like the short, leisurely rides that just about anyone could do — even someone without a bike.

That’s the case with Saturday’s Historical Southport Bicycle Tour in downtown Southport. This mellow ride around town takes in Fort Johnston, the Brunswick Inn, the Old Brunswick Jail, the Crimes of the Heart Home, The Indian Trail Tree along the Cape Fear River and more. And at two hours, there’s plenty of time to study the sights. Led by The Adventure Company.

Logistics: Saturday, Oct. 5, 9 a.m. $15 if you have a bike and helmet, $20 if you need a bike and helmet. More info here.

Piedmont

If you head the to the Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve in Southern Pines Sunday afternoon and hitch on to the Old Growth Hike, you’ll be in the presence of something extremely special: the oldest known longleaf pine on Earth. Old Bessie (not the tree’s real name) rings in at 465 years of age. (We’ll save you the mental gymnastics: this tree sprouted would have sprouted in 1548, not long after Columbus et al started wrecking havoc on the New World.)

Come see one of the few remaining survivors from the year when Emperor Charles V ordered Catholics to become Lutherans. (A slow news year.)

Logistics: Sunday, Oct. 6, 3 p.m. Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, Southern Pines. More info: 910.692.2167

Mountains

We like Sunday’s Haint Hike at Elk Knob State Park near Jefferson for the hike’s unusual packing list. The hike is up the Summit Trail and it’s led by “a native Appalachian [who] tells ghost stories from way back in the hollows of Appalachia.” So what do you pack for a haint hike? “Participants should bring hiking attire and a box of tissues, as they will be frightened.”

Logistics: Sunday, Oct. 6, 2 p.m., Elk Knob State Park, Todd. More info here.

Sunday forecast: High of 63, 20 percent chance of rain.

If you’re looking to escape the weather this weekend, consider this: the forecasts for our three events in the mountains (Swannanoa), the Piedmont (Orange County) and at the coast (Wrightsville Beach) are this: High of 88, 20 to 30 percent chance of precipitation. Likely, it will be hot and a bit muggy wherever you go. Fortunately, we’ve found three events cool in both concept and execution.

Coast

A sound strategy when it’s hot: Get out early and stay near water, a big body preferably.

Friday morning’s Birding Tour hosted by Audubon North Carolina fills both bills. It starts at 9 a.m. (from Public Access 43 on Wrightsville Beach) and it focuses on the birds of the Atlantic coast (among the bigger bodies of water around). A non-heat-related plus: it’s free.

Logistics: Saturday, Aug. 3, 9 a.m. Wrightsville Beach, Public Access 43. More info: 910.686.7527

Saturday forecast: High of 88 (in the afternoon), 30 percent chance of rain.

Piedmont

Another way to stay cool is to generate your own breeze — say, on a bike traveling 15-18 mph. You can do that Saturday on Tour d’Orange, a supported ride benefiting the MS Society. (Despite the geographically limiting name, the ride also tours into d’Chatham and d’Alamance counties.) It’s supported both in the on-the-route sense and the in-the-tummy sense, with nutrition provided by Jersey Mike’s, Mediterranean Deli and Maple View Farms. Routes of 34, 66, 85 and 100 miles.

Logistics: Saturday, Aug. 3, 8 a.m. $30/$40. More info here.

Saturday forecast: High of 88, 20 percent chance of precip.

Mountains

When I hike or backpack I frequently wonder about the history of where I am. I wonder about the hominids who have tread here before me, I wonder about what the terrain looked like 100, 200, 10,000 years before. When I’m vaguely familiar with the history of a place, I often start with what I know and build from there.

In the Black Mountains, for instance, I often wonder about the travels of Dr. Elisha Mitchell. In addition to being something of a one-man show during the initial days of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill — professor of math, philosophy and natural history; bursar; accountant; and, stints as acting president — Mitchell found time to explore the high country. In fact, it was his passion to explore what he believed to be the highest country yet discovered in the United States. During his last expedition to verify the altitude of what would later become Mount Mitchell, he slipped and fell to his death at a waterfall on the mountain.

Saturday, the Swannanoa Valley Museum will sponsor a hike to that 25-foot falls where Mitchell, in his early 60s, met his adventurous end. The 6.5-mile hike is lead by local history expert Wendell Begley, and is described as “… moderately difficult … along an old logging road surrounded on wilderness. There are several stream crossings and short bushwhacking section requiring the use of a rope.”

Logistics: Saturday, Aug. 3, 8:30 a.m. Carpool from the museum, at 223 W. State Street in Swannanoa. $30 for museum members, $50 otherwise. More info and to register: Emailinfo@swannanoavalleymuseum.org or 828.669.9566.

Saturday forecast: 88 (in Swannanoa, likely cooler on the hike), 30 percent chance of rain.

A cool bike ride in the mountains or a leisurely day on the water in the Piedmont and coastal plain: Those are but three of your options this weekend in North Carolina.

Coast

What better place to spend a muggy, 90-degree day than on a river? And not just an hour or two of the day, but at least half of it.

That’s the plan at Lumber River State Park Saturday as they celebrate Lumber River Day with: “Canoe rides, canoe races, display booths, exhibits, fancy dancers, ol’ timey tractor parade, display of historic tractors, dulcimer lessons, blue grass music, Native American dancing and drumming, local artists at work, horseshoes, kids wet t-shirt races, kids fishing contest, casting contest, face painting, free prizes, giveaways, and more.” More?

Logistics: Saturday, July 20, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Free. More info: 910.628.4564 or here.

Saturday forecast: High of 90, 40 percent chance of afternoon rain.

Piedmont

Most park-sponsored, guided canoe trips are short. An hour, maybe two and that’s it. Saturday, though, is a different story on the Mayo River. They’ll be putting in at 10 a.m. and taking out sometime around 4 p.m. — six hours on a river you may not have paddled. Advises the sponsoring Mayo River State Park: prepare to wade, prepare to get wet.

Logistics: Saturday, July 20, 10 a.m. Free, all equipment provided. More info by calling 336.427.2530 or going here.

Mountains

This month’s Cycle to Farm ride in the high country originates in Black Mountain and begins with free locally roasted coffee courtesy Dynamite Coffee. That after three free yoga and stretching. Such a civil way to begin a ride.

Alas, the metric century is sold out but you can still get in on the 15-mile ride that hangs close to Black Mountain. Not a bad thing because that way you’ll get back to that free coffee all the sooner, not to mention the post-ride party featuring a locally sourced and produced meal of pizza, pasta, side dishes and desserts. Live entertainment, too. And, a musette bag full of “various goodies” from local sponsors.

Saturday forecast: High of 82, 50 percent chance of rain in the afternoon.
