Coast

It’s been a long week, so we’re going to invoke playlay — sorta like the pirate’s parlay — which allows us to begin the weekend a little early, say, Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.? Which is convenient because that’s when a ranger will be leading a guided canoe trip on the coastal plain’s Jones Lake at the state park of the same name. You have to be able to swim; otherwise, no experience necessary. Canoes and equipment provided.

Logistics: 3 p.m., free but because of limited space preregistration is required, by calling 910.588.4550.

Saturday forecast: High of 90, 20 percent chance of rain.

Piedmont

Pressed for time on the weekend? Got some stuff around the house you really need to get done? Then do it, and afterward head up to Haw River State Park for Bats at Dusk, an evening program that involves hanging out on a boardwalk as daylight begins to wane and watching the bats come out. Learn about bats and get a hike in down to the Haw. And if you get there before the program, you can check out this, one of the state’s newest state parks, which includes a semi-rustic conference facility, which includes an outdoor pool.

Mountains

I like a good mountain event that embraces all levels of cyclist, from the casual recreational greenway rider to the aspiring George Hincapies. Which is what we have in Saturday’s Blue Ridge Breakaway, a ride out of the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center in Haywood County that offers a 105-mile century-plus, a 65-mile metric century, a 40-mile ride and a 24-mile ride.

Logistics: All rides commence at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, onsite registration runs from 6-6:30 a.m., $54 for the 105-, 65- and 40-mile events, $35 for the 24-miler. More info here.

Sail the not-so-high seas, run with the lions and tigers and bears, take a long bike ride in the mountains. You’ve got all sorts of options in North Carolina this weekend.

Coast

You’ve taken the local learn-to-sail class on the local lake, and it was fun. It also made you wonder what it would be like to sail the high seas. Or if not “high” — because, frankly, that sounds a little scary — then at least the salty spray, because that taste in your mouth is what tells you you’re really sailing. Sunday, you have a chance to get a sense of that Columbusian sense of adventure at the North Carolina Maritime Museum’s Adult Learn to Sail program. “Learn the basics aboard stable sailboats” — doesn’t get much more reassuring than that. The course runs from 1-5 p.m. $95. Reservations are required.

Piedmont

Frankly (again), few things would give me more incentive to set a 5K PR than running amid lions

and tigers and bears. In this case, fortunately, the lions and tigers and bears and other denizens of the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro will be unable to give chase as you make your way from the North America section then into Africa. According to the race organizers, “… you may hear the morning howls of our red wolves or the wake up roars of our lions.” Sub 20, here I come!
The race is Saturday, with onsite registration beginning at 6:30 a.m., the race at 7:30. $25 if you register online, $30 race day.

Mountains
When it comes to “cycling events” (they aren’t races, really!) in the mountains, not everyone is up for a full century (100 miles), a metric (62 mile), or even a 40-mile ride. Sometimes, especially when big hills are involved, 24 is just right. That’s one of the nice things about Saturday’s Blue Ridge Breakaway out of Lake Junaluska — you have your option of supported rides, from the mellow 24-miler to the 100-mile assault-on-sanity. It’s a day of cycling that, depending on the distance you chose, will take in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Pisgah National Forest and, if you opt for the Century, 30 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Ride starts at 7:30 from the conference center. $54 for the Century, Metric and 40-miler, $35 if you’re going for 24.
