We’ve got a celebration of the Scuppernong River by paddle craft, a Great Amazing Race for you and a member of your family near Charlotte and a duathlon (trail run/mountain bike) on private property (worry not, it’s legal) near Asheville.

Coast

The Scuppernong River near Columbia is an intriguing waterway. Downstream from town it begins to open up before quickly dumping into Albemarle Sound. Upstream, it immediately becomes an intimate paddle through a coastal forest setting. Experience the Scuppernong Saturday as part of the 21st Annual Scuppernong River Festival in Columbia. A boat tour of the river is just part of the day’s festivities, including arts & crafts vendors, a classic auto show, live music & entertainment,  youth rides and amusements, and, of course, food. The daylong event ends with fireworks.

Piedmont

Looking for an activity the whole family can do? An activity where you can compete against other families? An activity that could earn you a shot at the national championship and a grand prize of $2,000!?

OK, first let’s reel in the hype. Competition in the Great Amazing Race is limited to two family members — a kid and a parent, say — and is patterned after TV’s “The Amazing Race.” You’ll compete in eight “fun-filled challenges” at stations spread across a one-mile cross-country course. (There are other rules, which you can read about here.) The race is Saturday at Pineville Lake Park in Pineville (near Charlotte) art 2 p.m.

Logistics: Race is at 2 p.m. Saturday, race registration and packet pickup begins at 1:15 p.m. $40 per team. More info here.

Mountains

It’s hard to fin a good off-road duathlon, that pairing of trail run and mountain bike ride, but you’ll find it this Sunday at Dig the Du in Asheville. Start with a 2.5-mile trail run, followed by 12 miles of singletrack, topped off with another 2.5 miles of trail running. The intriguing thing about the race: it’s on private property in Henderson not open to public recreation the rest of the year.

Logistics: $55 to race on race day ($65 for a two-person team, $85 for a three-person team). Race starts at 10 a.m. Register here, more info here.

If you’re a cyclist looking to do your first century ride, you have a big ally in the coastal plain: the closest things to a hill? Bridge overpasses. Couple your urge to log triple-digit miles with a good cause —  Ride to a Wish, which raises money to help kids battling serious illness a chance to fulfill a dream — and you’ve got Saturday’s Tour de Wish out of Columbia (on US 64 east of Manteo).  The Tour actually kicks off Friday evening with a Zombie Hash (appropriate dress required) pasta dinner at 7, followed by Saturday’s 8 a.m. ride, which winds through scenic (and flat) Tyrrell County. Stick around afterward for live music. 50- and 33-mile options as well.

Logistics: $20 registration fee and you must raise a minimum of $50, a nominal amount as these events go. (That’s a minimum: last year’s event raised more than $30,000 and granted six wishes.). More info here.

It’s a full moon Saturday, and nighttime events abound, from paddles to hikes, including one aimed at kids at the Annie Louise Wilkerson MD Nature Preserve Park in Raleigh. “Many animals are active right around sunset or shortly after. Take a walk with a park naturalist to explore the woods and fields at this special time. Look for deer, foxes, coyotes, owls, moths and lightning bugs.” Nothing like a pair of beady eyes glaring at you from the forest’s inky depths.

Mountains

This weekend, starting Friday, it’s the 15th Annual French Broad River Festival in Hot Springs, a classic combination of live music on two stages with outdoor activities, including the 8th Annual French Broad River Festival Mountain Bike Race on Saturday at 9 a.m. (route and other information provided at that time) and a 9-mile raft race, from Barnard down the French Broad to Hot Springs (including one Class IV rapid), also beginning at 9 a.m. You can also get tips on whitewater paddling from U.S. Freestyle Rodeo Team member Eli Helbert in a Paddle with the Pros clinic, and there are various outdoor activities for the kids.

Logistics: The Festival begins Friday afternoon. Fee structure varies: Festival ticket-holders participate free in all events, individual fees for the races. More information here.
