The kids are mostly out of school, let the family escapes begin. To the coast, for a standup paddleboard or kayak tour, to the Piedmont for some fat tire fun, to the mountains for a mellow hike.

Coast

Standup paddleboarding and kayak fishing may seem like odd bedfellows. But on Saturday, they’re married for a day of fun on the water at the Brunswick Waterfest in Wilmington. On the SUP side, there’s racing in four categories on a course on the Cape Fear River that starts and ends at the U.S.S. North Carolina battleship. There’s also a SUP Derby and several guided SUP and kayak trips. The kayak fishing tournament is for bass; a freshwater North Carolina license is required.

Logistics: Saturday, June 7, Wilmington and Leland. Cost varies by event. More info here.

Saturday forecast: High of 82 under mostly sunny skies.

Piedmont

Saturday is National Trails Day across the land. We’ll have details on NTD events around the state tomorrow; today, we’ll highlight one event happening in the Triangle: the Triangle Fat Tire Festival.

This two-day event at Lake Crabtree County Park in Morrisville starts Saturday with a trail workday on the venerable Lake Crabtree trail network, then concludes Sunday with a celebration of all things mountain bike, from a kids race, to time trials to a dirt jump skills clinic to group rides and maintenance clinics. Lots of vendors on hand, too.

Logistics: Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, Lake Crabtree County Park in Morrisville. More info here.

Weekend forecast: Highs in the mid to upper 80s under mostly sunny skies.

Mountains

Every week during the summer, Blue Ridge Parkway rangers lead hikes along the parkway. The hikes are generally geared toward folks who may not realize there are hiking trails along the parkway. Folks for whom communing with nature essentially means a drive-by overlook viewing. On these ranger-led hikes, motorists will actually emerge from their vehicles and take a short hike.

This week, on Friday, that short hike will be a one-mile roundtrip to the top of Devil’s Courthouse at Milepost 422.2. If you think the views from the overlooks are great, invest a little sweat equity and you’ll score an even more memorable view. Water, walking shoes and clothing for “changeable weather” recommended.

Logistics: Friday, June 6, 10 a.m. Devil’s Courthouse Overlook, Milepost 422.2 Blue Ridge Parkway. More info by calling 828.298.5330, ext. 304. Information on upcoming hikes here.

Friday forecast: High of 80, chance of an afternoon thunderstorm.

This weekend, there’s inspiration by the surf, less perspiration in an evening run, more inspiration (not to mention answers to vexing questions of the great outdoors).

Coast

Sometimes watching can be as inspiring as doing. Case in point: This weekend’s 7th Annual Reef/Sweetwater Pro-Am Surf Fest at Wrightsville Beach. Some of the best pro and amateur surfers in the world will descend on Wrightsville in one of the largest surfing competitions on the East Coast (OK, so the East Coast of the Atlantic ain’t exactly the North Shore). The action begins on Friday, runs through Sunday and includes an art and music festival at Wrightsville Beach Park on Saturday.

Some, get caught up in the fun, watch some great surfing and who knows, you sign up for surfing lessons before you head home.

More info here.

Piedmont

Obviously on a daytime run. Running in the evening would boost his spirits.

The notion of a summer 5K that begins at 7 in the evening — as the temperature is cooling rather than climbing — would seem incentive enough to sign up for Saturday’s Beat the Heat 5K in Winston-Salem. Add to that the fact the race is the USATF 5K Championship race for North Carolina and will attract the running world’s elite (seeking $2,500 in prize money) and there’s even more incentive. But wait, there’s more! The race uses the “novel WAVA age and gender handicapped scoring system [that] allows all 5K runners to judge their performance with the fastest runners in the field.” AND, instead of yet another T-shirt, the top 50 WAVA finishers get a Beat the Heat coffee mug!

So, who to make the check out to? That would be the Twin City Track Club, for $30 if you register at the race, which begins and ends at Wake Forest University’s BB&T Field, $25 if you register online by Friday through Active.com.

Mountains

I always wind up with more questions than answers when I go for a hike: What kind of tree is that? What’s that frog I’m hearing in the distance? Should I take it personally that a bird just pooped on my head?

Getting in touch with his inner waterbuffalo.

Expect to have a lot of those questions answered at this Friday and Saturday’s 8th annual Mountain Wildlife Days, based out of the Sapphire Valley Community Center. Friday offers several hike options: 9 a.m. Bird Walk, 10 a.m. hikes at both Panthertown Valley and the Devil’s Courthouse along the Blue Ridge Parkwy, and a Green Salamander field trip; 9 p.m. Owl prowl with “Eagle Lady” (see below). More questions answered at presentations held Saturday by Freeman Owle, Rob Gudger, Kate Marshall and Doris Meager (a k a the aforementioned Eagle Lady).
