Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.

Today’s 90-Second Escape: (Home of the Future) Falls Whitewater Park

Not long after Falls Lake opened in 1981, there was talk of creating a whitewater park below the Falls Lake Dam. A white paper on the whitewater was done, but the project soon faded. A little over a decade ago, the white paper was dusted off and interest in the park — spurred in part by news of Charlotte’s National Whitewater Center — was renewed. Raleigh and Wake County got on board and more than $350,000 in government money was committed to the project. Now, a group of paddlers, the Falls Whitewater Park Committee, has formed to raise the remaining funds to make the park a reality.

The park is a much more modest version of the NWC. Plans call for basic rechanneling of the river below the dam to create viable spots for beginners to accomplished paddlers to play. Find out more about the effort here.

And spend the next 90 seconds looking at the future of paddling in the Triangle.
