]]> Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.

Today’s 90-Second Escape: Crabtree Falls, Virginia

How had I gone so long without being aware of Crabtree Falls, just up the road in Virginia near Charlottesville?

Located in the George Washington National Forest, Crabtree Falls drops a little over 1,200 feet in five major cascades, making it the tallest waterfall in the eastern United States. A well-designed trail supplemented with observation decks along the way make the 1.7-mile walk well worth the effort (though you can get the effect of the falls from near the base).

Better still, above the falls it’s another 1.3 miles to Crabtree Meadows and a half mile beyond that to the Appalachian Trail. Seven miles (round trip) of some of the best hiking around. Here’s a sample of what you’ll find.
