As daylight continues to dwindle, so, we assume, do our opportunities for outdoor adventure, especially during the work week. But did you know that not all of the natural world goes to sleep when the sun goes down? In fact, for some, sunset means it’s time to rise and shine.

Learn to make the most of the coming dark by signing up for Friday’s Night Hike at Halyburton Park in Wilmington. N.C. Wildlife Educator Beck Skiba leads a two-hour exploration of who’s up after dark in the park, explaining the adaptations that make it possible and why the night shift is preferred by some critters. (She’ll do some fun stuff, too.)

Logistics: Friday, 6-8 p.m., Halyburton Park, 4099 S. 17th St., Wilmington. Free, but pre-registration is required, by calling 910.341.0075.

Friday evening forecast: 70 degrees and darkening (sunset is at 6:22 p.m.)

* * *

Looking ahead: North Carolina Birding Trail Hike, Dec. 15, Halyburton Park. More info here.

So why do they run? Because of an add-on, usually something completely unrelated that makes running seem … not like running.

Add-on? you inquire.

Yes, such as Saturday’s Queen City Costume Dash 5K. Thousands of costumed folks will queue up at 5:30 p.m. for a dash through town; for some, the goal will not be to win their age category (of which there are seven) but to win the coveted costume contest.

Some will also show up for another popular non-running reason to run: beer. There’s a pub crawl as well.

Logistics: Saturday, 5:30 p.m., Inside-Out Sports, 1514 S. Church St., Charlotte. $45. More info and to register, here.

Saturday forecast: High of 80 at race time under sunny skies.

Or at least you see them at the start. In this Saturday’s Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo, those “pretty good cyclists” are actually some of the best pros around. For starters, there’s Brent Bookwalter of Asheville, a four-time Tour de France veteran and 2016 Rio Summer Games Olympian (he created the race with wife Jamie). There’s also Asheville-based Rio Olympian Rushlee Buchanan, along with Jonny Clarke, John Murphy, Matthew Busche, Adrian Hegvary, Ty Magner of Team UnitedHealthcare; Joey Rosskopf of BMC Pro Cycling; and, Lauren Komanski of Twenty16 Pro Cycling.

“Our event is unique in the number of professional riders we bring in to ride with our participants,” Jamie Bookwalter told the Asheville Citizen-Times. “These guys and gals spend the year racing around the world on numerous continents, so it’s such a treat that they give up a precious off-season weekend to support us and our charity, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.”

The ride has course options of 82, 63, and 30 miles, starting from Pisgah Brewing Co. and winding through scenic roads of Black Mountain and Swannanoa Valley.

Logistics: Saturday, 9 a.m., Pisgah Brewing Co., Asheville’s River Arts District. Fees vary. More info here.

Saturday forecast: High of 78 and sunny.

Looking ahead: Noland Creek guided hike, Nov. 1, led by Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. $20 members. $35 for new and renewing members. Visit www.Hike.FriendsoftheSmokies.org to register.

At the coast, we start with a Wellness Walk intended to get you off the couch and moving about. In the mountains, we finish with one of the most taxing events around, the half ironman. And in the Piedmont, pick up a paddle and explore a river you may not know.

Coast

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-7792" src="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/WP.Coast_3-300x259.jpg" alt="Walking: what could be more natural (courtesy R.
You have to walk before you can, well, run, hike, skip … . Walking leads to a lot of things, which is why we’re recommending Saturday’s Wellness Walk on the Summer Rest Trail in Wilmington. Sponsored by New Hanover County Parks & Gardens, Brian McKeever, Physical Therapist and owner of Lumina Wellness & Physical Therapy, will lead the 1.4-mile walk, which will be at a casual pace. No age restrictions.

Curiously, the hike begins at the trailhead by Port City Chop House.

Logistics: Saturday, Aug. 8, 9 a.m., Summer Rest Trail, 1981 Eastwood Road, Wilmington. Free. Go here for more information or call 910.798.7622

Saturday forecast: High of 74 at walk time, with a chance of thunderstorms developing later in the day.

* * *

Looking ahead: Too hot to paddle during the day? Then try it at dusk, with the Masonboro Island Sunset Kayak Trip on August 26, departing from the Trails End Park Boat Launch in Wilmington. $35-$45, contact Halyburton Park here or by calling 910.341.0075 to sign up.

Piedmont

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-7793" src="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/WP.Piedmont3.jpg" alt="The Mayo (photo courtesy N.C.
Some places you’re comfortable paddling on your own. You know the water, you know the access. Some, however, you feel more comfortable being part of a guided group.

We’re guessing that’s the case with the Mayo River, which you may have heard of, but that’s where your familiarity ends. Saturday, let a Mayo River State Park ranger guide you down a stretch of the river that will start at the public boat access at Old Anglin Mill Loop Road and end at the public boat access on U.S. 220 Business. Expect to be on the water about six hours.

No boat, no problem. Be among the first 11 to register and the park will supply a canoe, paddle and pfd, free of charge.

Logistics: Saturday, Aug.8, 10 a.m., Mayo River State Park. To register and learn more, call 336.427.2530.

Saturday forecast: High of 85, sunny.

* * *

Kick it off early at the coast with a paddle down the Black River; kick it off with a rare, on-the-water look at a millpond; kick it off with three days of adventure kicks in Asheville. All are guaranteed to make it a memorable weekend.

Coast

Officially, summer doesn’t start until June 21 (at 10:51 a.m., for you sticklers), though unofficially we tend to associate the start of the season with Memorial Day weekend. Of course, there are always extenuating circumstances.

We here at GetGoingNC tend to expand the definition of weekend once summer — unofficial, Memorial Day summer — begins. We’re going to bend our definition even more so we can suggest Halyburton Park’s Black River Kayak Trip on Thursday. The Black River is a magical waterway. It contains some of the cleanest water in the state and meanders past some of the oldest trees in North America, including some dating back to the AD/BC transition. This is a daylong affair (including the drive to and from the river).

Logistics: Thursday, May 22, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. $50/$65. More info: 910.341.0075, info@halyburtonpark.com

Thursday forecast: High of 91, partly cloudy.

Piedmont

We’re always on the lookout for rare opportunities, such as the Paddle the Pond program offered this weekend at Yates Mill Pond.

Paddling the 20-acre millpond, part of 174-acre Yates Mill County Park in Raleigh, is just such an opportunity. Saturday and Sunday, the park is leading morning canoe trips on the millpond, which will include discussion of the millpond, the mill that once operated on the pond, and the pond’s ecology. The hour-long trip is for ages 6 and up.

Logistics: Saturday, May 24, 10:30-11 a.m.; Sunday, May 25, 11 a.m.-noon. $10 per boat. Preregistration required, buy calling 919.856.5635.

If it’s Memorial Day weekend it must be time for the Mountain Sports Festival in Asheville.

Kicking off Friday and running through Sunday, the Carrier Park-based festival includes lots of live music and a cross-section of the stuff that excites us, from foot races (Rock2Rock 10K, Rise N’ Shine 5K, MSF Mile Run), Youth Ultimate Frisbee, Kolo Flow Mountain Bike Race and dodgeball, to cyclocross, standup paddleboarding and more.

From Saturday on, gradually at first, the sun starts setting a little later every day incrementally increasing our daylight for play.

But let us not dwell on the future (beyond this weekend, that is). Take advantage of the sunlight we have by taking a hike: to look for birds at the coast, to look at a big rock in the Piedmont, to look at views seldom seen in the mountains.

Daylight is short, make the most of it.

The North Carolina Birding Trail links more than 300 popular birding sites across the state. The sites have been singled out because they tend to host an especially diverse population of birds, either year-round residents, migrants or both. Tomorrow at 8 a.m., birders from Halyburton Park in Wilmington will lead an exploration of one of those 300+ sites, at Brunswick Town. A great opportunity to learn the identities and habits of the avian world around you.

Stone Mountain State Park is known for its namesake feature: a 600-foot granite dome that rises from the surrounding woodlands. How does a big rock like that happen? How does a feature that, says the park’s website, is “part of a 25-square-mile pluton, an igneous rock formed beneath the earth’s surface by molten lava,” come to be? Find out Saturday when a park ranger discusses Stone Mountain’s curious geology at “Geology of Stone Mountain.”

It’s always good to know about a hike not many people may be familiar with: it gives you a sense of pioneering empowerment, akin, in a skewed, “I’m-a-lot-less-adventurous-than-I-think-I-am” way of viewing the world, to what Lewis & Clark might have felt. While most folks are familiar with the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, the Carolina Mountain Club believes not that many know the 10-mile stretch between NC 80 and Woods Mountain. The CMC describes it as “a little-traveled section of the eastbound MST … with seldom-seen views of the Blacks [Black Mountains] and Mt. Mitchell.” Sunday, the CMC offers a chance to hike this stretch and acquaint yourself with the MST mysterious side.
