]]> Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.

Today’s 90-Second Escape: Homemade Hammock Raft on the Cape Fear

Last summer, fresh out of high school, my stepson, Ben Rice, and his buddies Alex Clarke, Colin Surra and Alex Prestrud, built a raft of recycled and donated wood, strapped on a few pickle barrells for flotation, and spent a few days paddling it down the Cape Fear River, from Erwin to Old Bluff Church.

It is the quintessential adventure, combining creativity, ingenuity, a dash of fearlessness and disregard for comfort. And they captured it wonderfully in a video that exceeds our usual 90 Second constraint (by 194 seconds). It’s well worth the extra time.

Take a few minutes to remember what it was like to by 18 and worry free — at least for a few days.
