And practically over in a flash.

I was fortunate enough to spend the day hiking in Greensboro: along the Watershed Lakes, at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, at Hagen Stone Park. Twenty miles of spectacular color under mostly sunny, cool skies. Yet driving home to Cary, I could already see the color retreating from the roadside woods.

That’s not to say you won’t find some color this weekend, and some good color as you head east of I-95. But the peak has passed. Here are some highlights from this week’s N.C. Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development Piedmont Fall Foliage Report:

Falls Lake State Recreation Area: There are still some dark reds and yellows in the trees, but most of the leaves around Falls Lake are now dominated by various shades of muted oranges and browns.

Crowders Mountain State Park: As quickly as the change came, the peak time for our fall colors has passed.

Yet there are bright spots:

Kerr Lake State Recreation Area: The landscape is in full autumn blaze.

Eno River State Park: This week we will see the peak of our fall color change.

So, you will find some color as you hit the trail this weekend, and you may find some good color. One thing we know you will find: a forecast promising sunny skies and highs in the low 60s.

If you’re looking for a place to explore, check out our brand new Short Trails of the Triangle, 13 trails of six miles or less that are more about aesthetics than aerobics. Find that list here.

Enjoy.

A reminder that if you want to catch good fall color but don’t have time to drive to the mountains, nature’s autumn display is starting to play in the Piedmont. The N.C. Division of Tourism, Film and Sport’s Development is keeping tabs on the evolving fall show at Piedmont Foliage Reports, with various state parks, natural areas and recreation areas weighing in. According to the most recent reports, as of Wednesday Kerr Lake State Recreation Area reported it was “about 60 percent on the way to peak.” Pilot Mountain State Park is being to bloom as well, while at Mayo River State Park there’s still “some green, but we are beginning to see more yellow, gold and some orange in the foliage now.”
Frankly, I’m hard pressed to think of something to do outdoors that doesn’t involve water.

There’s swimming, of course. At your local pool (search for local parks and rec departments with pools at the North Carolina Recreation & Parks Association Web site), at a trusted swimming hole (find 76 in North Carolina at SwimmingHoles.org), at the coast (find Outer Banks beaches here, Wilmington area beaches here and assorted other beaches here.

There’s paddling. If you have a canoe or kayak, check out our list below of 21 state parks that have canoe/kayak access. If you don’t have your own boat, there’s always our trusty list of 35 Places Where You Can Rent a Canoe or Kayak in the state. If you’re up for a guided trip — from a quiet journey through a black water swamp to a rollicking romp down Class II, III and IV water, check out this list of outfitters statewide.

Or maybe you’re just looking for an excuse to go wading. Saturday, get your feet wet in the cool waters of the New River during and Aquatic Sampling program at 1 p.m. (336.982.2587 for details on this trip, which meets at the Wagoner Access Area), while Sunday at 2 p.m. at Stone Mountain State Park there’s Aquatic Wild, a chance to poke about the East Prong of the Roaring River for wet wildlife.

Whichever wet option you chose, don’t forget the sunscreen, a hat, protective clothing, bug spray, perhaps a snack or two. And fun, don’t forget to have fun.

Enjoy!
