<p>National Trails Day is non-denominational: you can celebrate on a paddle trail, a bike trail or a hiking trail. Come one, come all.</p>
<p><strong>Coast</strong></p>
<p>Most ranger-led paddle trips are quick one-hour affairs. This Saturday at Lake Waccamaw State Park you’ll have a full half day to explore this Carolina Bay in the wake of a knowledgeable lead. The paddle starts at 10 a.m.</p>
<p><em>Logistics</em>: Free, but preregistration is required, by calling 910.646.4748. Learn more about the lake and the park <a href="http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/lawa/sights.php" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wunderground.com/weather-forecast/28450" target="_blank"><em>Saturday forecast</em></a>: Partly cloudy early, then clear. High of 82.</p>
<p><strong>Piedmont</strong></p>

<p>Saturday is <a href="http://www.americanhiking.org" target="_blank">National Trails Day</a>, and as we noted yesterday there are 29 events officially registered in North Carolina. One of the most wide-reaching is the <a href="http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/index.aspx?page=3614" target="_blank">National Trails Day Festival in  Greensboro</a>, at Bur-Mil Park. Guided hikes, guided bike rides, guided paddle trips, kids stuff, workshops, music, food — it’s pretty much got it all. Starts early (7 a.m.), ends before it gets too nasty out (1 p.m.).</p>
<p><em>Logistics</em>: 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Go <a href="http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/index.aspx?page=3614" target="_blank">here</a> for more details and directions.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:27401.1.99999" target="_blank"><em>Saturday forecast</em></a>: Cloudy early, then clearing. High of 75.</p>
<p><strong>Mountains</strong></p>
<p>We’ll go with National Trails Day again in the mountains, this time a hike up</p>
<figure id="attachment_4125" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4125" style="width: 300px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/GboroNTD.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-4125" title="OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" src="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/GboroNTD-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/GboroNTD-300x225.jpg 300w, https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/GboroNTD-600x450.jpg 600w, https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/GboroNTD-573x430.jpg 573w, https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/GboroNTD.jpg 640w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-4125" class="wp-caption-text">Paddling near Bur-Mil Park.</figcaption></figure>
<p>to 6,189-foot Grassy Ridge along the Appalachian Trail near Carver’s Gap. One of the best hikes around, mostly exposed (crossing two balds to get to Grassy Ridge) and very mountain meadowlike.</p>
<p><em>Logistics</em>: Gather in Burnsville at 9 a.m. to take public transportation up to Carver’s Gap ($5). Return to Burnsville around 3 p.m. Sponsored by the <a href="http://www.nchighpeaks.org/" target="_blank">NC High Peaks Trail Association</a>, where you can go for more information.</p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.wunderground.com/US/MN/Burnsville.html" target="_blank">Saturday</a> forecast</em>: Clear early, trending to partly cloudy. High of 77.</p>
