Flytrap Half Hell Haul 7K: even if you don’t run, how could you not want to be a part of something with a name like that! And when you discover the Half Hell Haul is on the trails of the Boiling Spring Lake Preserve, well, that’s got to seal the deal.

Boiling Spring is a coastal preserve near Wilmington protected by both the state and The Nature Conservancy. Among it’s rare plants: the Venus flytrap, and it’s one of just 15 Venus flytrap populations remaining in the world. With Venus flytraps being carnivorous, there’s added incentive to log a good time. And the Half Hell in question? That would be the Half Hell Swamp.

Logistics: Saturday, March 22, 9 a.m. $15-$30. More information here.

Saturday forecast: High of 73, mostly cloudy. http://www.wunderground.com/weather-forecast/US/NC/Wilmington.html

Bikram? Kripalu? Power yoga sounds a little aggressive, and what’s the deal with hot yoga: down dog in a 103-degree room? Really?

Saturday, you have a chance to sample different types of yoga and get some of those questions answered, at YogaFest NC, a day-long celebration of yoga at the McKimmon Center at N.C. State University in Raleigh. Various types of classes, meditation sessions, educational programs, exhibitors, complimentary massages. And lunch catered by Neomonde. A daylong affair.

Logistics: Saturday, March 22, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. $55. N.C. State University McKimmon Center, Raleigh. More info here.

We love hiking. We love hiking at night. So you can imagine how excited we get about hiking in the mountains at night. Pretty darn excited.

And it’s hard to imagine a better place to hike at night in the high country than Mount Jefferson State Natural Area. Mount Jefferson rises more than 1,600 feet above the surrounding landscape, topping out at more than 4,000 feet. In the dark, that translates some pretty cool views of the lit landscape below. This hike, out to Luther Rock, has some challenging climes, so come prepared.

If you’re going outside — and you know you will — it’s a better idea than usual to keep moving.

Coast

Five miles is a nice distance to run, we’ve always felt. A 5K — 3.1 miles — feels too short, too fast. And a marathon just seems ridiculously long (our judgement on this may be clouded as we’re signed up for the Umstead Trail Marathon Saturday and the thought of a 5-mile race is darn attractive right now). If you also like the sounds of a 5-mile run, then head to Greenville Saturday for the 2013 Patriot Run benefitting Fort Bragg’s Survivor Outreach Services, which helps families who have lost a serviceman/woman in combat. Awards by age category.

Logistics: Saturday, March 2, 8:30 a.m. $20 if you register by the end of today, $25 from tomorrow through race day. More information and to register here, or call 252.328.6085.

Weekend forecast: High of 50, partly cloudy.

Piedmont

Have you ever hiked at your local state park and wondered about its origins, specifically the origins of its older, stone buildings? Get a sense of how many of our state parks came to be by hearing the story of one park, Hanging Rock, on Saturday’s CCC History Hike. Roam around and here the history of Hanging Rock State Park, which, like many of North Carolina’s state parks, dates to the 1930s.

Logistics: Saturday, March 2, 2 p.m. Free. More info here.

Mountains

Depending upon how you define “waterfall,” the falls known as Upper and Lower Whitewater on the North Carolina/South Carolina line south of Cashiers may be the highest in the eastern United States. Regardless of your persnicketiness regarding geographic precision, the Thompson River’s drop, in sections, of 400 feet is spectacular. And it’s the destination of Sunday’s hike by the Carolina Mountain Club. Total distance, on the Foothills Trail, is 11.6 miles and the hike is rated “strenuous.”

Logistics: Meet to carpool to trailhead at 8:30 a.m. Contact hike leader Don Gardner at 828.493.1127 or gardog3@bellsouth.net to reserve a spot and find out where to meet.

Did you know this is about the time in the new year when people begin to lose their resolve to be healthier and more active? If you feel you may be at risk, check out our statewide prescription for a prolonged active lifestyle. We have something for the team player (volleyball at the coast), the nature lover (a geology hike in the Piedmont) and — what’s a nice way to put this — the nutcase, in the form of a night downhill mountain bike race in the mountains.

Stay active, my friends.

Coast

Someday, I’m going to get three friends and head to the coast for the periodic 4 x 4 Coed Indoor Volleyball Tournaments held by the Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation Department. You must pre-register, which discourages the unpracticed, and the $55 team fee is fair but, again, makes you take the tourney a bit more seriously. And, there’s the prospect of prize money — 70 percent of the take goes to first place, the remaining 30 percent to second place — which could cover gas and a stop on the way home at Smithfield’s Chicken and Bar-B-Q! It’s BYOB (Bring Your Own Ball).

Logistics: Pre-register by calling Emerald Isle Parks & Recreation at 252.354.6350 by 5 p.m. Friday. Six team limit. More info at the aforementioned number or via smcnally@emeraldisle-nc.org. Games start at 8 a.m.

Saturday forecast: The tourney is indoor, but if you lose in the first round bring outdoor play clothes: the weatherman is calling for partly sunny skies and a high of 50.

Piedmont

Brisk weather for hiking is in the forecast for this weekend in the Piedmont; if you’re a fan of medium brisk, then you might want to plan on hiking Saturday, when the temperatures will be a skosh warmer. It just so happens there’s a mountains-in-the-Piedmont hike Saturday, at Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area in Hillsborough. This popular hike explores this pyrophyllite quarry with insights offered by a bonafide geologist. Plus, Occoneechee, the highest point in Orange County, is especially good in cold weather. Don’t ask why, just is.

Logistics: Saturday, Jan. 26, 2 p.m., Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Hillsborough. Free, but pre-registration required, by calling 919.383.1686. More about Occoneechee Mountain here.

Saturday forecast: High of 43, clear with clouds moving in as the day progresses.

Mountains

Don’t you love an event where the name says it all? Like Saturday’s Icycle Mountain Bike Event out of Fontana Village? The Icycle consists of a cross-country race — several actually, in various categories and skill levels. All on a 7-mile course that “consists of varied terrain with rocks, roots, creeks, & wide open passing lanes offering some of the finest western North Carolina singletrack.” There’s also the Icycle Night Downhill, described as “not for the faint at heart.” A minimum 10 watt/150 lumen light is required for this one.

This late summer weekend the great hiking is at the coast and the paddle festival is in the mountains. Crazy, eh?

Coast

Think fall hiking and you typically think of the coast. But Saturday at 10:30 one of the weekend’s best guided hikes will be at the Rachel Carson Reserve. Sponsored by the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort, the hike is a rare opportunity to learn about life on this barrier island.

Logistics: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 15. $15. More info here.

Saturday forecast: 82, 20 percent chance of rain.

Did you know Greensboro has a Downtown Greenway? It’s a four-mile loop that wraps around downtown — or will, when it’s done. To raise awareness of the greenway as well as funds to make it happen, join in Saturday’s Run 4 The Greenway 8K on a route approximating the greenway’s path. Not up for the entire route? There’s a 1 Mile Walk/Run as well. Best of all: You needn’t get up at the crack of dawn for this race — it starts at 5:15 p.m.

Logistics: Saturday, Sept. 15, $35. Registration begins at 3 p.m., the fun run at 4:45 p.m., the 8K at 5:15 p.m. More info here.

Piedmont

I usually don’t throw out mountain bike races as a weekend option because they’re typically targeted to a more adrenaline-influenced crowd and they can be expensive to enter. None of that applies to the venerable Huck-A-Buck this Sunday at Lake Crabtree County Park in Morrisville. The Huck-A-Buck has a competitive element, to be sure, but race founders Chris Pappas and Pat Lundergan with Happy Fun Racing have done a great job ensuring that the Huck remain a Race for the People — meaning people like me, who can show up and not be obviously out of place in the aforementioned adrenaline-happy crowd. I’m especially glad to suggest the Huck-A-Buck considering last year’s 10th edition was rumored to be the last. Long live the Huck!

There’s racing in a variety of categories, from Kids and Juniors 11-18, to Clydesdales (200+ pounds) to Cat 1. The course is a 7-mile loop of fast, beginner/intermediate singletrack, and the entry fee is ridiculously cheap, at $25 ($15 for Juniors, free for pre-Juniors).

Logistics: Racing begins at 9 a.m., with categories going off at 9, 10:30 and noon. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Details here.

Sunday forecast: A brisk 82, “Mostly cloudy and cooler with some showers and storms possible,” according to WRAL.

With cooler weather moving in, what better way to start a day at the coast than with a quick 5K around Wilmington’s Bellamy Mansion, which, according to itself, is “one of North Carolina’s most spectacular examples of antebellum architecture built on the eve of the Civil War by free and enslaved black artisans, for John Dillard Bellamy (1817-1896) physician, planter and business leader; and his wife, Eliza McIlhenny Harriss (1821-1907) and their nine children.” The Bellamy Mansion Race for History starts at 8 a.m. Do your 3.1 miles, then return to the mansion for breakfast before launching the rest of your day.

Logistics: Race is at 8 a.m., preregistration fee is $25, day of is $30. Details here.
