Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.

Today’s 90-Second Escape: Paddle Charleston

We’ve been in a paddling frame of mind of late, what with the hot weather and the blindingly blue skies.

Today, we revisit a trip to the Charleston, S.C., area from three years ago and a paddle on Rantowels Creek. Here’s hoping the skies stay clear enough this week for a little after-work paddle.

90 Second Escape: Paddling Upper Rantowles Creek, S.C.

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.
Today’s 90-Second Escape: Paddling Upper Rantowels Creek, S.C.

The day began early — at 4:30 a.m. — with thunder, lightening, rain. The rain continued for about 250 of the 300-mile drive to Charleston, S.C. By the time we put in at Bulow Landing south of town Sunday morning, blue was poking through a sky that had been forecast to be sodden. The scene was set for a stellar 2-hour paddle that justified nine hours behind the wheel.
I joined 8 other members of the Charleston Sea Kayaking Meetup on this tour of Upper Rantowles Creek, a marsh area born of long-abandoned rice fields. Today, Upper Rantowels is classic marsh paddling, with channels of creek weaving in and out of cord grass. Some channels pay off, others result in what Scott, our assistant organizer, described as “a day of exploration.” (Meaning paddle ’til you can’t, then retreat and find a channel that goes through.)

And a day of exploration it was. Drop what you’re doing and tag along for taste of yesterday’s paddle.
