What’s the best outdoor activity in cold weather? Taking a hike. This weekend you can do it in a swamp atop a gorgeous Appalachian Mountain and over two high points of the Uwharrie Trail.

Goose Creek, by boat

The best time to hike in a swamp? Right about now, when the temperatures are keeping all the creepy, crawly, bitey critters at bay. And the best way to hike a swamp? Elevated, on a boardwalk.

Which is what they’ll be doing Saturday morning at Goose Creek State Park. The Palmetto Boardwalk isn’t long, but it exposes you to a world that otherwise would be difficult to access. Pennywort and ferns, Dwarf Palmetto, Spanish moss hanging tinsel-like from the canopy, bald cypress, black willows and live oaks, all the flora you associate with swamps — and on a hike with a ranger who will help you make sense of this evocative ecotone.

Logistics: Saturday, Jan. 10, 10 a.m., Goose Creek State Park, Washington. More info here: 252.923.2191, more information on Goose Creek State Park, here.

Saturday forecast: Sunny with an afternoon high of 38.

Piedmont

Who doesn’t love to discover a new trail? Even better: a new trail that’s actually new.

Saturday and Sunday, our GetHiking! program will explore 6.2 miles of new trail in the Uwharrie National Forest, a northern extension of the Uwharrie National Recreation Trail, from the Jumping-Off Rock trailhead off Flint Hill Road to Pisgah Covered Bridge Road. It’s an especially intriguing stretch, topping both Little Long Mountain, which offers one of the few vistas in the Uwharries, and King Mountain, one of the highest points in the range.

One more reason to do this hike: it will be lead by Don Childrey, author of the “Uwharrie Lakes Region Trail Guide,” the second edition of which was just released. Don knows the natural and human history of the region better than just about anyone.

Logistics: GetHiking! Triangle will do this hike Sunday at 10 a.m. GetHiking! Charlotte and GetHiking! Triad will do the hike Saturday at 10 a.m. For specifics, click on the GetHiking! chapter nearest you.

There’s a perception that just because you’re going to the mountains for a hike, it has to be a hard hike. In truth, there are lots of hikes for folks who don’t view every outing as an episode of “Survivor.”

Like Saturday’s YMCA-Woodfin hike at Bear Wallow Mountain. It’s a three-mile round trip with just a 500-foot overall elevation gain. You needn’t be a Y member, there’s even a carpool from the Y, at 40 N. Merrimon Ave. The hike is free, $5 for the carpool would be appreciated.

Bear Wallow Mountain: Jan. 10, 8:45 a.m.-3 p.m., YMCA-Woodfin, 40 N. Merrimon Ave., Asheville. Three mile round trip. 500 foot elevation gain. Easy. No need to be a Y member. Bring lunch and water. Dress accordingly. Free. $5 if carpooling. Registration required. Contact Blanca Miller at Bmoi735@gmail.com.

Logistics: Saturday, Jan. 10, 8:45 a.m.-3 p.m., Bear Wallow Mountain. Free, but pre-registration is required, by emailing Blanca Miller at Bmoi735@gmail.com.

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.

Today’s 90-Second Escape: Into the swamp.

Thanks to the “Creature From the Black Lagoon,” swamps have gotten something of a bad rap. Or if not a bad rap, certainly not the vibe of a place where one would go to seek peace and solitude. In fact, as the accompanying 90 Second Escape shows, few places offer the solitude that you’ll find in your friendly neighborhood coastal swamp.

Invest 90 seconds and take a quick paddle with us through the gut of Merchants Millpond State Park; we guarantee you won’t find anything to be afraid of.

Take that, gill boy.

It’s one of those weekends in North Carolina where you wish you could triplicate yourself … .

Coast

When anyone asks me for a good beginner canoe trip with great scenery, I never hesitate with the answer: Merchants Millpond State Park. For starters, it’s one of the few places in the state where you can rent a canoe year-round. Then, it’s only $5 an hour (that’s for the first hour; it drops to $3 an hour for the second and subsequent hours). But the main reason to paddle Merchants Millpond is the scenery. Paddling here is on a 190-year-old, 760-acre millpond peppered with bald cypress and tupelo gum trees draped in Spanish moss. The pond’s dark, acidic waters support floating mats of duckweed and water fern. It’s the quintessential swamp paddle minus the alligators (it’s been years since one has been seen).

Saturday at 2:30, take a guided paddle of the millpond with a knowledgeable naturalist and experienced paddler. The paddle will be preceded by instruction on the basics of paddling for you novices. There’s no fee, but spots are limited and pre-registration required, by calling 252.357.1191. For more on Merchants Millpond State Park, go here.

View from near the Ridgeline Trail in North Carolina.

Piedmont

Up for a long, serene hike spanning two states? It’s the second anniversary of the 12-mile Ridgeline Trail linking Crowders Mountain State Park with Kings Mountain State and National parks in South Carolina: to celebrate there’s a hike. At 9 a.m., hikers will set off from the Visitor’s Center at Crowders Mountain for the hike south. Lunch will be at the Boulders Access Area (home to the best legal bouldering in the North Carolina State Parks system). The trail begins with long, gradual climbs and descents and goes flat at the state line. The hike is scheduled to end by 5 p.m., and there’s a shuttle to bring folks back to Crowders Mountain. A good way to spend a day in April.

Mountains

Probably the most fun race in pro cycling — from a spectator’s perspective — is Paris-Roubaix. The one-stage, 160-mile race would be grueling enough based on its length. But the kicker for Paris-Roubaix is that a fifth of it is on cobblestones — not the most bike-friendly surface. It is affectionately known as “Hell of the north.”

Recognizing the obvious similarities between pictorial, pastoral France and Boone, Pirate Race Productions devised “Boone-Roubaix: The Hell of the High Country.” The Appalachian version of cycling’s Spring Classic is a race of 43 or 53 miles, with both routes including six stretches of pave — only in this case, instead of cobblestones it’s dirt and gravel road. Just what every road bike loves.

The race begins in Todd Sunday morning at 10. Registration is $30 online, $40 day-of-race. (On-site registration begins at 8:30 a.m.). For more information, call 828.719.8448, email info@pirateraceproductions.com or visit the Web site.
