There’s a little rain in the forecast, but mostly sun. After recent events, you’re obliged to get out and make the start of our galaxy feel welcome. And there are events aplenty this weekend to help you do just that.

Coast

Photo courtesy National Down Syndrome Society

If you like your movement to have meaning, you’re in luck this weekend. In the Wilmington area alone, there’s the 17th Annual Son Run 5K (benefitting The Carousel Center, A Safe Place and Methodist Home for Children), Color Run 5K (childhood obesity), Cape Fear Buddy Walk (Down Syndrome), Wellness Walk (healthy living), Live.Love.Throw! Cornhole Tourney (New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Pink Ribbon Project) and the Wilmington Area CROP Hunger Walk.

Are you ever torn between two adventures. Say, for instance, the forecast says you should get out in the woods and enjoy the emerging fall color on the trail. Yet you also hanker for something more physically challenging. Rock climbing, perhaps?

Slake both thirsts in one outing this Sunday, with GetHiking! Triangle and the Triangle Rock Club. First, at 4 p.m., GetHiking! Triangle leads a 4-mile hike on a portion of the Sycamore Trail at Umstead State Park in Raleigh. Then, the group heads 10 minutes down the road where the Triangle Rock Club hosts a couple hours of indoor climbing on its 13,000-plus square feet of wall (plus another 7,000 square feet of bouldering surface).

No experience? No problem. Plenty of helpful types will be on hand to help you enjoy both experiences.

Logistics: Sunday, Oct. 11, 4 p.m., starting with GetHiking!
Run. Bike. Run.

Sounds like an elementary primer for the adventure set. In fact, it’s the 2015 Dig the Du: WNC’s ‘Dirty Duathlon.” Benefitting OpenDoors of Asheville, the event consists of a 2.5-mile run, a 12-mile mountain bike ride, then another 2.5 miles of running. The course, at Sky Valley Farms in Hendersonville, is described as “not only a good introduction to off-road, multi-sport events but … also a great venue for seasoned athletes.”

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.
Today’s 90-Second Escape: Going Up the wall

Saturday, the Triangle Rock Club opened its expanded Morrisville climbing gym: an additional 17,000 square feet of climbing wall, walls up to 55 feet high (the existing gym topped out at 24 feet), foot dryers … . You can read more about the expanded gym in Friday’s post.

Managing Partner Joel Graybeal gave GetGoingNC a sneak peek at the gym Friday morning. The peek included a climb. What’s a 55-foot wall like? my acrophobic self wondered.

Turns out my biggest surprise wasn’t so much the height (in part, that didn’t surprise me because I never looked down; note the lack of a perspective shot in the video): It was how long it takes to climb 55 feet as opposed to just 24.

I strapped a GoPro Hero3+ to my head, buckled up and gave it a go. Here’s 90 seconds of how it went (it took me closer to four minutes to climb a very mellow — but again, relentless — 5.6 route.

Saturday you’ll be able to get high in Morrisville.
Really high.
Saturday is the grand reveal for the Triangle Rock Club’s Morrisville expansion, an additional 17,000 square feet of climbing surface, some of which reaches as high as 55 feet. That’s more than twice as high as the walls in the existing gym, which opened in 2007. The original gym, which will focus on youth programs and classes, has 9,000 square feet of climbing space.
Last September, TRC opened a gym in North Raleigh with 13,000 square feet of climbing space. Combined the two gyms offer 39,000 square feet of indoor climbing.
“We’re excited about people getting to see the gym,” Managing Partner Joel Graybeal (Andrew Kratz and Luis Jauregui round out the management troika) said on a preview tour this morning.
The expanded gym reflects how far the TRC has expanded the concept of indoor climbing in the Triangle. Before entering the market seven years ago, indoor climbing here was done in converted warehouses with holds bolted into plywood. Amenities? Bathrooms.

The expanded Triangle Rock Club includes:

A bouldering section with built-in 15-inch padding (no crash pad required).

Lead climbing in more than half the gym.

Systems wall, which Graybeal describes as a workout wall with holds placed symmetrically.

Reactor wall, a new feature to TRC: On the 36-foot wall, the bottom third is slanted inward, the middle third is flush and the upper third is an overhang.

A surprise, to be unveiled Saturday, that is less about the going-up part of climbing, more about the coming down.

Non-climbing features include:

1,500 square feet of multipurpose space that can be used for group exercise classes to corporate meetings.

A cardio room with two treadmills, two exercise bikes, a Jacobs Ladder and an elliptical trainer.

Wifi and workspace off the back of the gym.

A back deck and outdoor grill.

Another surprise to be reveled Saturday evening, that’s more about the apres-climb experience.

Bathrooms, including “foot showers and dryers.”

“That’s a first in a climbing gym, says Graybeal. Never again will you have to leave with smelly gym feet.

Jason Thomas had one concern when a climbing gym opened in his hometown of Cortez, Colo.
“Will it hurt my hands?”
Assured that it would not, he gave it a try.
“I was hooked immediately,” says Thomas. So much so that despite still being in high school and having now climbed once, he asked the head of the rec center housing the gym who was managing the wall. No one? Well, mind if I give it a go?
That led to an improbable trajectory that saw him head to the University of Colorado in Boulder (to major in Philosophy) because of the local climbing, a job at a Boulder climbing gym, and soon to Eldorado Climbing Walls, where he managed to talk his way into a construction job. That was in 2005. Today — literally today — he stood at the base of the “tall walls” at the freshly minted Triangle Rock Club North Raleigh talking with climbers about his latest creation as Eldo’s lead designer (officially, he’s the company’s Design and Creative Director).
To the untrained eye, the new gym, which opened at noon today, more resembles something you might find at the N.C. Museum of Art with a sign at the base reading “Do Not Climb.” The angular, vibrant orange and yellow walls cover 13,500 square feet, climb to 30 feet and are pocked with an array of equally artsy plastic holds. When Thomas explains his inspiration, though, he doesn’t refer to cubist influences, modernism or realism. He starts with the business of demographics.
“I think of areas in terms of different user groups,” says Thomas. Standing just inside the entrance to the gym, carved out of a cavernous former Gold’s Gym at Duraleigh Road and Glenwood Avenue, Thomas explains the crucial first impression he hopes to land.

Jason Thomas stands before The Beast

To the left is a low-lying beginner wall. To a first-time climber it’s reassuring: I could do that, the novice thinks.
There’s an open area straight ahead, then slightly right of center is The Beast. The capstone of the gym’s expansive bouldering area, The Beast is an intense overhang — no more than 5 1/2 feet off the ground at the start before gradually swooping up to the ceiling.
“We want people to look at that, see people going up it, and think, ‘I want to do that!’,” says Thomas. “For any beginning climber it’s about progressions,” he says. “You need something to work toward.”
To the far right is the more advanced climbing area, dominated by a 30-foot spire. Again, progressions.
The gym is a collaboration of Eldorado’s wall building expertise — the company has built more than 110 gyms in the U.S. — and the Triangle Rock Club’s business model.
“They are the best in the business,” says Thomas.
The process began about six months back when Thomas flew into Raleigh to check out the future home of the North Raleigh TRC. At the time, the building was the gutted three-story remains of a Gold’s Gym. Thomas met with TRC managing partners Joel Graybeal and Andrew Katz, head route setter Scott Gilliam and facility manager Skinny Eney and kicked around some ideas. Then they went to Graybeal’s house, had dinner, drank a few beers and gathered around the big screen, where Thomas started to bring their shared vision to life with a 3D computer modeling program. Thomas went back to Boulder and within a month and a half they had a plan.
Thomas said TRC management was eager to improve on its gym in Morrisville. For instance, the intense bouldering area there is in a high traffic area. In North Raleigh, The Beast has plenty of room for passersby to get around.
“We didn’t want an 8-year-old at a birthday party getting landed on by someone bouldering,” says Thomas.
The bouldering area is particularly spacious, in large part to accommodate a key element of the sport: socializing.
“Bouldering is much more social,” says Jerad Wells, Eldorado’s CEO and a former professional climber. “People like to talk about the routes, they like to Tweet about it, they like to post about it.”
Another nice feature for the beginning boulderer: the beginning to intermediate bouldering area is in the back of the gym, where there are fewer eyes to watch your clumsy attempts at your first V2.
TRC also wanted the programming area — where classes are taught — separate from the main walls.
“They felt the classes were cramming the regular members [in Morrisville],” says Thomas.
The target market for the gym may surprise. Climbing gyms are viewed as the domain of lithe, athletic, 20somethings, but the Eldo crew had someone else in mind when they designed this gym.
Moms.
“Our demographic is the same for Home Depot and Starbucks,” says Wells. “We go after families, and moms in particular since they tend to be the decision makers.”
“When I design a gym I design 80 percent of it for the beginner climber,” says Thomas.
The Eldo crew has kept plenty busy trying to keep pace with the current climbing boom. Thomas says they currently have nine gyms in various stages of construction across the country, “but we’ve got about 25 in design through completion.”
And it’s not just private gyms such as the TRC keeping them busy. They do a lot of school and university walls, rec centers, and outdoor projects, including a 50,000-square-foot outdoor climbing structure for the Boy Scouts in West Virginia that was designed to resemble climbing in the nearby New River Gorge. They’ve even begun installing climbing walls in office buildings.
State-of-the-art as the Triangle Rock Club North Raleigh is, Thomas says climbing gyms are evolving by the day.
“Boundaries are being pushed every day,” says Thomas. “As long as there’s a surface to be on and hand holds to hang on to, people will climb it.”
The trick, he says, is appealing to the moms, the families and the beginner masses, while still enticing the devout. Motioning to The Beast, he adds:
“You still need to have that ‘wow!’ factor.”

The Triangle Rock Club is expanding — again.
In May, the TRC announced plans to add 16,000 square feet of climbing wall to its existing facility in Morrisville. The addition, scheduled to open in January, will boost the gym’s total climbing space to more than 24,000 square feet and introduce 50-foot walls, twice the height of the gym’s current walls. It will be the largest climbing gym in a five-state area.
As managing partners Andrew Kratz, Luis Jauregui and Joel Graybeal were unveiling those plans, they were working to finalize a deal on a second gym, in North Raleigh. Announced yesterday, the new gym will have 13,500 square feet of climbing area, a
30-foot free-standing climbing pillar and more than 74 climbing lanes. The new facility is at 6022 Duraleigh Road, just off Glenwood Avenue/U.S. 70.
“We understand our customers are only willing to drive a certain distance to work out at the gym, climb, take an instructional class, or drop their children off at a climbing camp,” said Graybeal. “We are comprehensively serving the Morrisville/Cary area, but feel there is a distinct need in North Raleigh for another TRC facility.”
From a demographic standpoint, the gym is well situated between high-density apartments to the north, west and south, and miles of single-family homes to the east.
From a recreational standpoint, the gym is less than a mile as the crow flies from Umstead State Park, creating any number of climb combos: climb-run, climb-bike, climb-hike. There are also several bars and restaurants nearby.
The North Raleigh facility will be especially popular with boulderers. Two features in particular will prove challenging: the Grenade and The Beast, which features a severe (to GetGoingNC’s V1 skill set) overhang.
Eldorado Climbing Walls of Boulder, Colo., is installing the climbing walls in both gyms.
The North Raleigh facility is a former gym and is scheduled to open Sept. 1.
Not long ago, indoor climbing gyms were typically low-budget affairs in abandoned warehouse space that attracted mostly hardcore climbers. The TRC’s rapid expansion has been driven in part by those same devout climbers, but also by families and recreational athletes. Along the way, climbing gyms have evolved into bonafide businesses. TRC was named Morrisville’s Small Business of the Year for 2013, and even the president and CEO of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, weighed in on TRC’s North Raleigh expansion.
“The growth in climbing for sport and recreation has exploded in recent years and we are excited to have Triangle Rock Club open a premier facility in Raleigh,” said Harvey Schmitt in a release issued by TRC. “TRC also has a strong focus on civic engagement and will be an excellent addition to our business community.”
TRC isn’t done yet.
“Now that we have secured our second site location in the Raleigh-Durham market,” said Graybeal, “we are moving quickly on a third site to better-serve the Durham/Chapel Hill area. We are also planning to open up additional locations in Charlotte and the Triad.”
