<p><strong>Coast</strong></p>
<p>Tis the weekend of the pumpkin run, and while they abound across the state the <a href="http://its-go-time.com/trick-or-treat-trot-and-monster-mile-oct-27 " target="_blank"><strong>Trick-or-Treat Trot</strong></a> in downtown Wilmington rises to the top of our list. In large part, that’s because it’s in downtown Wilmington. Run your choice of race — Monster Mile, 5K or 10K — at 9 a.m., then have the rest of the day to kick around Wilmington. Hang downtown, head over to <a href="http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/cabe/main.php" target="_blank">Carolina Beach State Park</a> and do some exploring, hit the beach (the water temperature at Wrightsville Beach as of Tuesday was 71.6).</p>
<p><em>Logistics</em>: $35 for the 10K, $30 for the 5K, $15 for the Monster Mile. Races are at 9 a.m. More info <a href="http://its-go-time.com/trick-or-treat-trot-and-monster-mile-oct-27 " target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wunderground.com/weather-forecast/US/NC/Wilmington.html" target="_blank"><em>Saturday forecast</em></a>: High of 73, overcast.</p>
<p><strong></p>
<figure id="attachment_4772" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4772" style="width: 300px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/JordanLake1.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-4772" title="OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" src="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/JordanLake1-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/JordanLake1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/JordanLake1-600x450.jpg 600w, https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/JordanLake1-573x430.jpg 573w, https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/JordanLake1.jpg 640w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-4772" class="wp-caption-text">Jordan Lake</figcaption></figure>
<p>Piedmont</strong></p>
<p>Instead of a monster dash, how about a <a href="http://events.triangle.com/cary_nc/events/show/273219307-haunted-trail-hike " target="_blank"><strong>Halloween Hike</strong></a>? That’s the plan Saturday night at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, when hikers can check out the temporarily haunted The Children’s Trail originating from the Parkers Creek area (Shelter #3 to be specific). Hike is from 7:30 to 10 p.m.</p>
<p><em>Logistics</em>: At the Parkers Creek area of Jordan Lake, from 7:30-10 p.m. More info <a href="http://events.triangle.com/cary_nc/events/show/273219307-haunted-trail-hike " target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:27511.1.99999" target="_blank"><em>Saturday evening forecast</em></a>: After a daytime high of 72 the overnight low drops to 54 under overcast skies.</p>
<p><strong></p>
<figure id="attachment_4773" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4773" style="width: 225px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><a href="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/Cataloochee.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-4773 " title="Cataloochee" src="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/Cataloochee-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" srcset="https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/Cataloochee-225x300.jpg 225w, https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/Cataloochee-300x400.jpg 300w, https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/Cataloochee-322x430.jpg 322w, https://getgoingnc.com/wp-content/uploads/Cataloochee.jpg 480w" sizes="(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-4773" class="wp-caption-text">A surviving barn from the old Cataloochee community.</figcaption></figure>
<p>Mountains</strong></p>
<p>The mountain hiking season continues to high form. Get in on the action Saturday with the <a href="http://carolinamountainclub.org/" target="_blank">Carolina Mountain Club</a> as it hits the Cataloochee Valley of the Great Smokies with a 9.3-mile hike. Starting from the far end of the valley hike the Big Fork Ridge, Caldwell Fork and Rough Fork Ridge Trails before checking out some of the remaining buildings from the once prosperous Cataloochee community.</p>
<p><em>Logistics</em>: Hikers gather in Asheville at 8:30 a.m.; check with hike leader Danny Bernstein at 828.236.0192 or danny@hikertohiker.com for more specifics.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wunderground.com/ski/nc/cataloochee_ski_area.html" target="_blank"><em>Saturday forecast</em></a>: High of 63, 30 percent chance of rain.</p>
