As far is Wings Over Water is concerned, your weekend started Tuesday.

Now in its 19th year, Wings Over Water is the coast’s premier celebration of the natural world. From Tuesday through Sunday, Wings Over Water events are held in a five-county region of northeastern North Carolina, an area that includes six National Wildlife Refuges: Alligator River, Pea Island, Pocosin Lakes, Mattamuskeet, Mackay Island and Currituck. There are birding events, there are paddling trips, there are photo safaris and this year there’s a new stand-up paddleboard tour.  If you’re curious about an aspect of nature at the coast, you’ll likely find a program to fill you in.

Logistics: Tuesday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Oct. 25, five-country area of northeastern North Carolina. Fees per session are generally between $25 and $40. For a complete schedule and information about the program, visit the WOW home page.

Forecast through the weekend: Very fall-like, with daytime highs around 70 under mostly sunny skies.

There’s more to fall than just the woods brimming with color. The bird population, for instance, is busy making winter travel plans.

Saturday, at Lake James State Park you can hang out with ranger Jamie Cameron and watch the fall migrants head south. Jamie can tell you which birds are which, as well as where they’re coming from and where they’re headed.

Mountains

If you’re contemplating a trip to the mountains this weekend, it’s likely in hopes of catching a last gasp of great color as autumn’s road show moves into the Piedmont. We’re guessing that color is part of the motivation behind the Carolina Mountain Club’s trip to Big and Little Cataloochee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Sunday.

Another motivator: the chance to explore the trails less traveled. In this case, the old “dug roads,” which date back to the 1850s and remain as viable paths today. This 6.5-mile hike will stick largely to these old roads, starting from the church in Cataloochee and crossing Noland Mountain before returning.

Coast

Come summer, we tend to loosen our definition of “weekend.” Shoot, lots of workplaces do the same, ceding employees a half-day head start on Fridays, knowing full well lots of us will be slinking off anyway.

That said, a great way to spend the Friday part of your summer weekend is on a guided canoe tour at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge between Columbia and Manteo. Every Friday afternoon from 1-4 p.m. between now and August, the refuge will lead two-hour tours, all equipment provided, on Milltail Creek, taking you “deep into the heart of Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Paddle the shady blackwater canals; learn about the history of the area. Watch and listen for the Refuge’s secretive wildlife.” We can’t guarantee a gator sighting, but in hot weather odds are good you’ll spot one lolling along the banks.

You bring a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and water, the NWR provides the canoe, paddle, pfd and wisdom.

Looking ahead: Let’s look way ahead to an event that always sneaks up on us, Wings Over Water. This six-day celebration of the coastal wild includes all sorts of programs, from canoe and kayak trips, to birding expeditions, to talks about nature and more. This year’s Wings is Oct. 20-25. Piedmont

Perusing the North Carolina Running Calendar, a pretty comprehensive account of the Tarheel race scene, we were stopped by one entry in particular: The Wilson Swamp Stomp. This year’s Stomp, the third annual, pledges to spend more time in the swamp, ensuring its spot in our weekly recommendations.

Held at Gillette and Toisnot parks in Wilson, the Stomp includes 5K and 8K versions, and, say race organizers, “Both courses are 65% in the woods or swamp.” They’ve even thrown in a few obstacles for those who don’t find running in a swamp challenge enough.

Awards, prizes, hoses at the end for contestants to tidy up. All proceeds benefit Hope Station, Wilson’s food pantry and homeless shelter.

Logistics: Saturday, June 13, waves of runners are sent off every 15 minutes between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sign up by the end of today and it’s $65 for the 5K, $75 for the 8K; register race day and it’s $75 and $85. More info here.

Looking ahead: Citizen science: you probably associate it with annual events such as the Christmas Bird Count and the Great Backyard Bird Count. But it happens every Saturday at the N.C. Museum of Natural Science’s Prairie Ridge EcoStation in Raleigh. A different project every week in which you — and your kids — can help make a difference. Learn more about the program here.

Mountains

Last Saturday was National Trails Day, this Saturday is National Get Outdoors Day. Mission of the latter: “… reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting our youth to the great outdoors.” Missions that mesh with our own.

Get Outdoors Day events are planned at more than 200 locations across the country,  including four in North Carolina. One of the four is Chimney Rock State Park, where from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. they’ll be doing all sorts of NGOD activities. According to the park’s synopsis: “See live critters, learn how to responsibly enjoy the outdoors with Leave No Trace, take a climb with Fox Mountain Guides, meet renowned Appalachian photographer Tim Barnwell and learn about N.C. State Parks Junior Ranger Program.”

Sounds like a jam-packed four hours and a good opportunity for connecting kids to the outdoor and introducing more folks to public lands.

Looking ahead: If you’re the type that loves a good fireworks display, then think hard about the July 4 Independence Day Fireworks Hike to Sunset Mountain hosted by the Swannanoa Valley Museum. At 6 p.m., hikers will head out from Black Mountain on a “moderate one-mile hike” on the abandoned road that, a century ago, took travelers to Mount Mitchell. Wings Over Water is underway at the coast, there’s a family bike ride through the autumnal Piedmont and there’s a chance to view the high country’s peak color from a peak.

Coast

If you’re into nature, and especially the nature of the coast, then drop what you’re doing and head to the Outer Banks region, where the annual Wings Over Water celebration is underway (it started yesterday and runs through Sunday). On tap: guided birding trips, art and photography workshops, tram tours of National Wildlife Refuges, guided kayak and canoe tours, a visit to an ancient maritime forest and more. Programs are scheduled in Dare, Currituck, Tyrrell and Hyde counties.

Piedmont

Usually we think of taking a hike to enjoy fall color. But on a bike ride, you can see even more. A bike ride such as Saturday’s Mayo Park Family Fitness Bike Ride originating out of Mayo Park in Person County. Two ride options: a 25K and 50K, both of which are supported and take in the largely bike-friendly roads of Person County.

Mountains

We’re hitting peak season for fall color in the high country, and what better place to take in the show than from atop a peak. At Mount Jefferson State Natural Area you can get a 360-degree view of the action in the northwest corner of the state (and into Virginia and Tennessee). And Sunday, you can take in the color and get a little education to boot on the ranger-led Fall Season Mountain Hike.

Got some vacation time — or in these hard corporate times, “furlough” time — you need to burn by year’s end? Tell the boss you’re taking off for a trip to the coast. True, the water is chilly and it’s hard to get an even tan wearing a parka. But that shouldn’t affect you since you’ll be at Wings Over Water.

For 16 years now, the folks at the northeast coast have been setting aside a week — Nov. 6 thru 11 this year — to celebrate the wonder of wildlife in the Outer Banks region. This year’s celebration consists of 85 programs: guided paddle trips, wildlife photo safaris, hikes, birding expeditions and more. Just about every type of nature excursion you can think of.

Piedmont

Sometimes your kids — and you — need a little extra incentive to hit the trail. A carrot to get you out in the cold. No, not a carrot. A deer skull, maybe. Or owl droppings. Or a certain kind of fungus.

That’s the intent behind Saturday’s Hunt for Fall Scavenger Hunt at the Reedy Creek Nature Center in Charlotte. Get scavenger hunt checklist, then head out with a naturalist who can help you check it off. A mile or two of trail hiking required.

Mountains

Here’s the dilemma of the flatlands distance trail runner: You’re intrigued by the idea of running a mountain trail, but you don’t know the mountain trails that well and you don’t know any mountain trail runners to tag along with. Your only option is to run these unfamiliar trails is to do a race. Or so you think.

In fact, there are trail running groups in the high country that would love to show you around. Groups such as the Swain County Trail Runners, who meet every Saturday morning to run the Smokies or in the Tsali Recreation Area. Now you have a friend in the mountain trail running business.

The weekend gets off to and early start (today) with the six-day Wings Over Water at the coast.

Coast

If you’ve ever thought about doing just about any kind of exploring at the coast — from birdwatching to paddling a swamp to howling with (or for) wolves, here’s your chance. The 15-year-old Wings Over Water, a six-day celebration of any thing and any place wild in eastern North Carolina, gets underway today. More than 85 programs explore the wildlife and natural history of the coast. Some by foot, some by boat, some with binos. Truly, just about any natural adventure you’d like to have.

Piedmont

Funny, but I don’t recall Andy and Opie lacing up the Asics for a run around the hood. I reckon that was before the running boom hit Mayberry, or perhaps I just missed that episode. But there’s still time to catch — and register for — Saturday’s Mayberry 10K & Half Marathon in Mount Air— er, Mayberry. Some of both routes is on greenway, some passes through “Historic Downtown Mayberry” (which greatly resembles historic downtown Mount Airy). $30 for the 10K, $40 for the 13.1-miler. Races start at 8 a.m., registration at 6:30 a.m.

Here’s hoping they have Aunt Bee’s Nesslerode pie at the finish. Here’s also hoping they don’t have her kerosene cucumbers. More race info here.

Mountains

I’m a sucker for certain hikes in North Carolina and the Ivestor Gap Trail into the Shining Rock Wilderness is one of them. Most of it is above treeline (a “treeline” created by a pair of devastating fires nearly a century ago), it’s above 5,000 feet (and flirts with 6,000 feet) and is scenic high country hiking at its best in North Carolina. That’s probably why the Sierra Club of Western North Carolina has selected it for its Saturday hike. The hike begins at the Black Balsam parking lot off the Blue Ridge Parkway and takes Ivestor Gap Trail to Shining Rock, where there’s good cavorting and scrambling to be done on the exposed white quartzite that gives the peak its name. Total hike distance is 8.6 miles.
