Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.

Today’s 90-Second Escape: Brooding sky

There’s something about being in the mountains — or outside, exposed, in general — when the sky is uncertain. When dark, brooding, clouds sweep across the sky, suggesting menace, yet holding back. You find yourself caught up in the marvel of nature, of whatever it is that’s about to happen — caught up to the point that a healthy fear of the elements that could, at any minute, be unleashed, abandons you. Sure, a bolt of air-to-ground lightening will change that in a jif, but until then, take time to embrace the miracle of the natural world.

Here, on the first day of spring 2015, I had the advantage of knowing that the clouds were on their way out, to let loose their energy and precipitation on the Piedmont to the east. Knowing this was especially comforting considering I’d be back early the next morning for a hike with my GetHiking! North Carolina’s Classic Hikes crew.
