Pilot Creek Exploration, Pilot Mountain State Park, Pinnacle. Saturday, 10 a.m. The phrase that hooked us on this event? “Please wear clothing and shoes you can get wet … .” The goal of this one-hour program is to see what lives in a creek. Details here.

Kayak Tour, Hammocks Beach State Park, Swansboro, Sunday, 8:30 a.m. “Enjoy this ranger-guided trip through the adjacent marsh water as we explore some of the ecosystems which make this part of North Carolina so special.  Kayaks, paddles, and lifejackets will be provided.”

Guided Canoe Trip, New River State Park, Laurel Springs. Sunday, 1 p.m. “Canoe the New River with a park ranger and learn the history of the river, and basic canoe instruction while you enjoy a leisurely trip down the river.” And yes, “Please wear clothing and shoes suitable for the water … .”

Coast

Forecast high Sunday for Spring Lake in the coastal plain: 101. Lordy!

At 9 a.m., however, it will only be 83, which in our book is good paddling weather. Good enough, certainly, to enjoy the Canoe Hike at Carvers Creek State Park, North Carolina’s newest state park. A novice? No problem. Start with an overview of basic paddling skills, then take your canoes out on the park’s cypress swamp.

Saturday forecast: Temp of 83 at 9 a.m. (on its way to an afternoon high of 101).

Piedmont

By 9 p.m., the sun has set, the temperature has dropped maybe 15 degrees: a temperature in the low 80s sure beats one in the upper 90s. Exploring in the dark suddenly doesn’t seem like such a weird idea, does it?

Especially when that adventure is coupled with the fun of searching for the first fireflies of the season. Saturday at 9 p.m. that’s what will be going on at Pilot Mountain State park; meet a ranger at the campground amphitheater “for an easy walk around the amphitheater to look for and learn about the unique natural history of fireflies or lightning bugs!” And learn all kinds of things in the process (like why neither name is appropriate; the light they generate is how they “cold” light).

Mountains

What could be better than a summer paddle that starts at 9 a.m. in 83-degree weather (see “Coast,” above)? How about a paddle that starts at 8 a.m. in 68-degree weather?

Bundle up (or at least bring long sleeves) for Sunday’s Canoe Excursion on Lake James, in the shadow of Linville Gorge’s Shortoff Mountain. Granted, that 68 will quickly evaporate — but won’t it feel good at the start!

A self-guided nature hike at Cliffs of the Neuse and a do-it-yourself canoe paddle at Haw River State Park leave you in control of your entertainment destiny. And if you’re not feeling particularly self-motivated, sleep in and let a ranger tell you about the fireflies at Elk Knob State Park.

Coast

I can’t count the number of times I’ve been walking in the woods, in a familiar spot, and suddenly surfaced and thought, Where the heck am I? Lost in thought on a hike — happens all the time. Apparently, the folks at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park are familiar with this phenomenon, for on Saturday they’re holding a Silent Hike. “Enjoy the summer sounds and get lost in your own thought,” says the coastal plain park’s Web site.  “The silent hike is a self-guided tour. There will be cards posted along the trail giving you a task to do or think about.”

I like the sound — or lack thereof — of that.

Logistics: Since it’s self-guided, you can do it whenever. Based on the forecast for Saturday (see below), you might want to do it earlier rather than later.

Saturday forecast: High of 90, 40 percent chance of rain and a thunderstorm in the afternoon.

Piedmont

It’s a laid-back weekend in the North Carolina State Parks system: Show up after 12:30 p.m. at Haw River State Park on Sunday and you can take a canoe for a spin on Robin’s Nest Lake. Especially good for the inexperienced as a ranger will be on hand to show you the basics of paddling. Eight canoes means there’s probably no waiting, a bevy of PFDs and paddles means all the equipment is provided.

Logistics: Starts at 12:30 Saturday afternoon. Free. Meet at the main lodge. Here’s how to get there.

Sunday forecast: High of 93, 50 percent chance of rain.

Mountains

You, light up the night … oh, sorry. Didn’t realize you were back FROM checking out the Haw River State Park Web site (above). I was just in a little reverie about my favorite summer insect, the firefly. And it looks like I’m not alone in my love of the luminous lampyridae, those winged beetles that light the summer night: Saturday evening Elk Knob State Park offers Fireflies — a Beacon in the Night. Come learn about what fires them up, then take a hike in search of the little  flashing flits.

Logistics: 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 4. Meet at the park office.

Saturday evening forecast: Overcast with a 40 percent chance of rain; bring a poncho.
