Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.
Today’s 90-Second Escape: Going Up the wall
Saturday, the Triangle Rock Club opened its expanded Morrisville climbing gym: an additional 17,000 square feet of climbing wall, walls up to 55 feet high (the existing gym topped out at 24 feet), foot dryers … . You can read more about the expanded gym in Friday’s post.
Managing Partner Joel Graybeal gave GetGoingNC a sneak peek at the gym Friday morning. The peek included a climb. What’s a 55-foot wall like? my acrophobic self wondered.
Turns out my biggest surprise wasn’t so much the height (in part, that didn’t surprise me because I never looked down; note the lack of a perspective shot in the video): It was how long it takes to climb 55 feet as opposed to just 24.
I strapped a GoPro Hero3+ to my head, buckled up and gave it a go. Here’s 90 seconds of how it went (it took me closer to four minutes to climb a very mellow — but again, relentless — 5.6 route.
