90 Second Escape: Content on Contentnea Creek

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.
Today’s 90-Second Escape: Contentnea Creek

Sold a boat from the fleet this weekend, a warhorse of a canoe I picked up a few years ago when my morning run took me past a yard sale. A good boat, an accommodating family boat that met our needs at the time. And a boat that will now be repurposed in much the same way, purchased by a fellow from Greenville who wants to start taking family trips with his wife and 5-year-old son.
“Where do you like to paddle down there?” I asked.
“Contentnea Creek,” he replied. And that sent me into wavy-line-dream-time, recalling a trip my daughter and I took a couple years back on a stretch of Contentnea just above where it empties into the Neuse. A peaceful, and at this point relatively wide creek with a lazy current and beaches made for landing and taking a dip on a hot summer’s day. A day much like today.
