As you go about your weekend, here’s something to think about from page 35 of Barry Popkin’s “The World is Fat: The Fads, Trends, Policies, and Products That Are Fattening the Human Race”:
“The average American Adult consumes 115 calories more per day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday than they consume on weekdays.”
(FYI, there are 115 calories in an ounce of peanut butter, a half cup of boiled black beans, a serving of Norwegian Creamed Cabbage and a banana.)
There is something seriously wrong when people start worrying about or being chastised for an extra 100 calories. What about those who exercise more or only on the weekends? Do they perhaps need extra energy? The only thing I can think about this bit of information is that this guy needs something better to occupy his time.
Good point about exercising and being more active on the weekend. I doubt there are many people who aren’t more active on weekends, whether they’re cleaning house, working on the yard or taking a 50-mile bike ride. I don’t think the professor was chastising; It came across as an observation, one that might make some people think more about their eating habits on the weekend. Still, it would have been helpful to put that figure in the context of a more active weekend.
