90 Second Escape: The Winter Woods
Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.
Today’s 90-Second Escape: The Winter Woods.
There is, to me, no better time of year to be in the woods than winter. There’s a certain stark, honest calm about the natural world this time of year. As the forest drops its leaves and sheds its groundcover, it seems to simultaneously drop its guard. There’s nowhere to hide, especially on a crisp, cloudless day when the brilliant Sun (Earth is closer to the Sun during our winter) illuminates every nook (save those cast in its long shadows). And there’s the quiet. If ever there was a time and place to be alone with your thoughts, it would be in the winter woods.
