90 Second Escape: Summer plods on

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.
Today’s 90-Second Escape: Summer Plods On

In the beginning, we can’t wait for summer to begin. Come Memorial Day, the neighborhood pool opens, we start counting the days — not weeks or months — until our beach vacation, we abandon the kitchen for the backyard grill. And it’s easy to see why: summer is a sly seductress, immediately giving us the heat we crave while holding back on the humidity that makes us wilt.

Summer doesn’t wait long, though, before working in those days of 90 degree highs and 90 percent sweats. Then, come August, the 90/90s become a daily occurrence. Just as we couldn’t wait for Memorial Day and the start of summer, we now can’t wait for Labor Day and the season’s ceremonial end.

Today’s escape is in reverse. As you sit in a (hopefully) cool workspace this Monday morning, take 90 seconds to flash back to the drenching weekend past. Perhaps by the time February rolls around you’ll be able to experience this minute and a half differently. With longing, perhaps.
