90 Second Escape: Sunny Days, Cold Nights at South Mountains

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.

Today’s 90-Second Escape: Sunny Days, Cold Nights at South Mountains

Content from GetBackpacking! in spring, at South Mountains

Our Winter and Spring GetBackpacking! classes took their graduation trip this past weekend to South Mountains State Park south of Morganton. For the Winter group, the trip was a rescheduled weekend: their original trip was postposed from February because of bitter cold weather (an overnight low of 7 degrees). By comparison, this past weekend was balmy, with the temperature overnight only dipping to 25.

The days, however, were classic: sunny skies swept of haze offering views of the snowcapped Smokies to the west, temperatures ideal for hauling 35 pounds on your back.

Take a few minutes to enjoy. Then, if you’re so inspired, learn more about our GetBackpacking! program, which we run in partnership with our partners in adventure at Great Outdoor Provision Co. here.
