90 Second Escape: Fall preview

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.

Today’s 90-Second Escape: Fall Preview

Sunday, our GetHiking! Triangle group got itchy for fall. So on a lark, we scheduled our first fall hike of the year — even though it was August 2, a month and a half before the vernal equinox. Darned if we didn’t get a taste of what we were looking for.

The temperature may have hit a seasonally appropriate 90 later in the day, and it was warm. But it was a dry warmth, and yes, there is a difference. There was something else: a telltale breeze that, especially in the shade, conjured something resembling a slight chill. The 23 of us hiking the Company Mill Trail at Umstead State Park were more than content with our first fall hike.

That got us in mind of the real fall, which got us to recall a video from a couple years back, of early fall at Hanging Rock State Park. Take 90 seconds and fast-forward a couple months for a sneak preview of what’s to come.
