Monday is never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast, especially come summer. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy.
To help ease this trying transition from out-in-the-Sun-day to Mon-I-wish-I-were-back-in-the-sun-day, we’re running a new feature every Monday, at least during the summer, called 90-Second Escape. Essentially, it’s a 90-second mini-movie of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s out in the sun. Because there’s a good chance you might want to make such an escape yourself, we’ll include a resource list with each escape showing where and how to make it happen.
Today’s 90-Second Escape: The Mount Rogers National Recreation Area of Virginia.
Where better to escape to during the heat of summer than the heights of Southern Appalachia. Mount Rogers, at 5,729 feet, is as high as it gets in Virginia. It’s also as stunning as it gets. Tag along for 90 seconds and see for yourself.
Then, if you’re inspired — and you probably will be — go to our sister Web site, NCHikes.com for everything you need to know about planning a trip to Mount Rogers.
I just returned from camping two nights at Grayson Highlands. I arrived just after a storm had blown thru and it was in the 50s. Absolutely perfect quick getaway from Raleigh — even in the middle of summer with plenty of day hike options + the “anyone can do it” bike ride from White Top to Damascus on the Virginia Creeper trail.
