Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.
Today’s 90-Second Escape: Fade to Winter
90 Second Escape Fade to Winter
From an connoisseur’s standpoint, it’s been a remarkably long and colorfully prolific fall. Week after week, we found ourself thinking, “Peak!” — then the color would get a scosh better.
Our last perceived peak was a couple weeks back now, but color continues to cling to the Piedmont woods. Sunday, on a day dominated by gray skies and occasional rain, a day that insisted that winter was just around the bend, the fall color of 2014 refused to quit.
Here’s 90 seconds of a GetHiking! hike in the Birkhead Mountains Wilderness of the Uwharrie National Forest that captures what might, finally, be fall’s last stand.
