Volunteers build a bridge on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.

Saturday is National Trails Day, a day set aside for us to appreciate the more than 200,000 miles of trail in the U.S. Officially, National Trails Day dates back to 1991, when  the American Hiking Society deemed that one day a year be set aside to honor our trails; the first NTD, however, didn’t occur until June 5, 1993. read more

  • 5 Mountain Hikes Accessible in Winter January 27, 2023
Winter hikes in the mountains intimidate us. Not so much the hiking itself — who doesn’t love tromping through a forest carpeted with snow? Rather, it’s simply getting to the trailhead. The prospect of icy mountain roads, of road closures, of other drivers who don’t know how to drive on icy roads. Why run the […]
  • A Year of Weekend Festivals Celebrating Trails January 19, 2023
Weekend trail festivals — a weekend devoted to all things trails — are great fun. Trouble is, what trail festivals there are in the area — AT Trail Days in Damascus, Va.; NC Trail Days in Elkin — are few and far between. Until this year. This year, as part of North Carolina’s observance of […]
  • Backpacking: A Hike that Doesn’t End January 12, 2023
What’s the worst part of a hike? When it ends and it’s time to head home. But what if the hike didn’t end and you didn’t have to go home? That would be backpacking.  Imagine, for instance, that instead of sadly piling into the car and heading home after 5 or 8 or 10 miles […]
  • Long hikes for a cold winter’s day January 4, 2023
The best thing about hiking on a cold winter’s day? You can hike forever. For starters, the cold itself is good incentive to keep moving. And the more you move down the trail the more you realize what a magical time of year this is in the woods. Winter’s sunlight knifes bright through a leafless […]
  • First Day options abound December 30, 2022
This week, it’s all about Sunday, New Year’s Day, and First Day Hikes — and First Day Outings. The latter First, first. On Sunday in North Carolina we enter Year of the Trail, as deemed by the State Legislature. All year, we will celebrate trails of every stripe: natural surface, paved surface, equestrian, hiker, mountain […]
