This weekend, may we suggest …
Coast
You built up a good head of fitness steam over the spring and summer and it seems a waste not to capitalize on it just because summer is now officially over. Well, here’s one more chance for your day in the sun: The 32nd Annual Wilmington YMCA Triathlon in Wrightsville Beach. It’s the biggest race in the North Carolina Triathlon Series, drawing 1,300 participants. The event starts at 7 a.m. with a 1,500 meter swim with the current from the Blockade Runner, followed by a 12-mile bike ride and a 5K — all very flat. $65 (add another $10 if you aren’t a member of USA Triathlon).
More info here.
Piedmont
Looking for a good beginner walk to kick start your fitness program for the fall? Check out the Walk With Me Triad 2010 walk, a 3K saunter through Greensboro’s Country Park. $10 to walk, free if you’re 12 or under and it is, obviously, for a good cause. Registration begins at 9 a.m., the walk at 10 a.m.
More info here.
Mountains
We’re gonna be heavy on the hikes for the next few weeks, in part due to the cooler, drier weather moving in, in part due to the color change, which always makes things more interesting. In the high country, there are always plenty of guided hikes going on; Saturday, we recommend the Carolina Mountain Club’s Pilot Rock hike. Warning: Carolina Mountain Club hikes are not for the once-a-year hiker. Saturday’s hike, for instance, gains 1,500 vertical feet in the first two miles on the Pilot Rock Trail. After lunch at Buck Springs Overlook, the hikers will descent down the Thompson Creek Trail.
