Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb.
Today’s 90-Second Escape: Fall color — looking ahead by looking back.
Sunday, we took a hike at Umstead State Park. The skies were clear, the temperature crisp (48 degrees heading out). In all but one respect it was a very fall-like hike. The one missing ingredient?
Fall color.
There was some, to be sure. A few hickories were flashing yellow, and at least one leaf seemed to be having a pigmentation identity crisis, displaying just about every color in the Piedmont’s fall spectrum. Largely, though, the canopy remained green.
Expect that to change over the coming week. High temperatures are expected to only flirt with 60 later in the week, and overnight lows will dip into the 30s. Clear skies are predicted for the end of the week. All factors that bode well for changing color.
