Our spate of great fall weekend weather continues. Amid a full lineup of ways to enjoy it, here’s what we are especially drawn to.

Coast

Make of this what you will: I go for a 5-mile run, my step-counter-dealiebob gives me credit for maybe 8,000 steps. I spend the day working in the yard, I hit my daily goal of 15,000 steps by noon. Which is to say, good aerobic exercise can come from unexpected places. read more

Another gorgeous fall weekend is on tap, one good for a night hike, a fun run or a mountain road ride with the best in the cycling business.

As daylight continues to dwindle, so, we assume, do our opportunities for outdoor adventure, especially during the work week. But did you know that not all of the natural world goes to sleep when the sun goes down? In fact, for some, sunset means it’s time to rise and shine. read more

90 Second Escape: Shy Fall Color

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb. read more

Allen de Hart: He wrote hiking guides, too

Allen de Hart, who wrote 11 trail guides, founded the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, hiked more than 65,000 miles by the time he was 86 (and would go on to hike several hundred more), and was generally regarded as the dean of North Carolina hiking, died Oct. 14, in Raleigh. Allen was known for hiking; those who knew him, knew him for much more. GetGoingNC’s Joe Miller remembers the lesser-known side of Allen de Hart. read more
