We begin our thoughts on weekend adventure with an adventure three weeks out that you can start training for this weekend.
Raleigh/Umstead CureSearch Hike, Saturday, June 1, Umstead State Park, Raleigh. I started leading hikes in 2011 after being contacted by an endeavor called the Ultimate Hike, a new fundraiser benefitting a group out to end childhood cancer. The deal was this: lead at least six training hikes in preparation for a 28.3-mile hike (in one day) on the Foothills Trail straddling the North Carolina/South Carolina line. I’d been telling people where to hike through books and newspaper columns for 15 years, why not actually take them, I thought. So I did. read more
We’re finally in full leaf-out and had our first taste of summertime temperatures. Some thoughts on how you can get out and enjoy.
16th Annual Paddle for the Border, Saturday, 8 a.m., Dismal Swamp State Park, South Mills. Picture one of those races where they release hundreds of tiny rubber ducks into a stream. Now, instead of tiny ducks, picture hundreds of paddlers. Crazy, no? That’s the craziness you’ll find this weekend as hundreds of paddlers make their way from the park up the Dismal Swamp Canal to the Virginia border. About a 7.5-mile paddle. Check it out here.read more
Today, we take a slightly different tack in our recommendations for how to get out and play this weekend. Events this weekend seem to center around certain themes, so instead of picking three specific events, we’re going with three themes and referencing the related events. Friday might be dicey over much of the GetGoingNC universe weatherize, but the weekend itself isn’t looking too shabby. Not a bad weekend, for instance, for the following:
Lassiter Swamp Canoe Trip, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Merchants Millpond State Park, Gatesville. Usually when we think about paddling the millpond at this state park nestled in the northeast part of the state, we think of a leisurely hour or so on the water. Not with this adventure, which paddles deep into the swamp for lunch, then continues on to “the big tree.” A six-hour tour. Bring your lunch — and a pair of knee boots. Learn more here, read more
We have a season-appropriate forecast for the weekend: partly sunny with temperatures in the upper 50s! Perfect for getting out and exploring. Perfect for:
Spring Hike, Cliffs of the Neuse State Park, Seven Springs, Saturday, 1 p.m. Spring comes even sooner on the coastal plain, so expect an extra-special treat on this 1-mile hike through a longleaf pine forest. The trail is flat, suitable for a range of hiking abilities. Learn more and sign up here.read more
