Yabba dabba ribs!

After two weekends of rain, this weekend is forecast to be clear, warm and ideal for getting out and exploring North Carolina.

Sometimes you need an unrelated catalyst to spur you to action. Like the 2nd Annual Port City Rib Fest, a three-day celebration of things BBQ to get you down to Wilmington to take advantage of all the great local activities: kayaking, surfing, standup paddleboarding, exploring Carolina Beach State Park or Fort Fisher. This weekend: Venture fourth

This July 4, celebrate our independence in the freedom of the great outdoors.

Note: Most coastal state parks are planning to close Thursday and Friday in anticipation of Hurricane Arthur. Their reopening is dependent upon Arthur’s wrath. Check the North Carolina State Parks website before heading to any park that may be affected by the storm. read more

Fall color: Going, going …

Last weekend’s fall color was pretty spectacular in the Piedmont. And practically over in a flash.

I was fortunate enough to spend the day hiking in Greensboro: along the Watershed Lakes, at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, at Hagen Stone Park. Twenty miles of spectacular color under mostly sunny, cool skies. Yet driving home to Cary, I could already see the color retreating from the roadside woods. read more
