Happy Labor Day! And Welcome to Fall Hiking 2018

We know: officially, summer has 19 days left. And while it doesn’t officially cede to fall until Sept. 22, in our hearts, today’s the day Summer spiritually hands off its sweaty baton to fall. Every year, it’s the same thing. Memorial Day arrives with great expectations for an adventurous summer. Then, suddenly, it’s August and that longed-for adventure has not yet happened.

Head for the mountains in our midst

When you have a hankering to head for the hills, but don’t have time for a trip to the mountains,  you can drive an hour or so to the mountains in the midst of the Piedmont.

In fact, long ago — 300 million to 500 million years — the Piedmont was the mountains. They bubbled out of the ground via volcanic activity, thrust as high as 20,000 feet by the crunching and colliding and folding of tectonic plates. read more
