Last year around this time, I was licking my chops over a great lineup of backpack trips I intended to take, including four short thru-hikes in the state. I even managed to get in two trips (including one of the thru-hikes) before I was forced to scrap my plans for the pandemic.

OK, so maybe we can’t celebrate our nation’s independence the way we usually do. But we can certainly celebrate our independence by getting out and exploring. And this year in particular by doing so in the true American spirit of being a maverick, a lone wolf. Someone who likes to get out and take an adventure of their own. Alone. Or at least six feet from anyone else.

Here’s what’s up the first full weekend in March, a weekend that, in the wee hours of Sunday, see’s the clock spring forward. Remember that when you tuck in Saturday night.
First Saturday Walk at Horton Grove Nature Preserve, Saturday, 10 a.m., Horton Grove Nature Preserve, Bahama. Horton Grove is one of the few area hikes we keep on our calendar year-round. It’s ample canopy offers cooler hiking below in summer, fall color here can be hue-tastic, its open forest floor offers lingering views in winter and on the cusp of spring you’ll think the season was invented here. Saturday’s First Saturday hike by the managing Triangle Land Conservancy should offer a particularly insightful look at the season. For more information and to sign up, go here.

There is still good fall color to be had, and based on the forecast, it’s to be had against a backdrop of crisp baby blue skies. That said, some thoughts on the weekend ahead.
- Fall Foliage Hike, Saturday, 1:30 p.m. Haw River State Park, Browns Summit. What we said above about the forecast should make the colors pop even more. Learn more here.
- Fall Tree ID Hike, Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Stone Mountain State Park, Roaring Gap. When was the last time you slow down enough on the trail to learn a thing? Can’t recall? Then this could be the most informative half mile you’ll come across this year. Learn more here.
