Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast, especially come summer. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. 
To help ease this trying transition, we’re running a new feature every Monday, at least during the summer, called 90 Second Escape. Essentially, it’s a 90-second video of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s in the sun. read more

This weekend’s Beaufort Pyrate Invasion may not, at first blush, seem to be about being active. Not “The Hysterically Correct Pirate Show” Saturday at noon, not the pirate invasion at 1:30, not necessarily the trial and hanging at 3 p.m. and probably not the Party with the Pirates from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. featuring BBQ and grog. But, the events, which begin Friday at 4 p.m. when the pirates come ashore, are at different locations, which means you’ll end up doing a lot of walking, and as we all know, walking is good for you (provided you keep to a minimum the walks to and from the BBQ and grog table). read more

More praise from the lab for cross-training

On Saturday’s 6-mile training hike for October 1’s Ultimate Hike, I was asked to clarify the weekly training schedule. “On Monday, it says to cross-train. What would qualify as cross-training?”

Something other than hiking that will build your strength, build your cardio, I answered. I ran through a litany of options, from riding a bike, to taking a yoga class to lifting weights. But I missed some obvious ones. Like work in the yard. Two things reminded me of that option. read more
