Charlotte's McAlpine Creek Greenway

In the mid-1990s the Triangle’s greenway system wasn’t a system. It was a disjointed connection of asphalt strips scattered hither and yon. If you lived a block or two away from one of these strips, you probably paid it an occasional visit. If you didn’t live within a block or two, you probably had no idea the Triangle even had greenways. read more

  • National Trails Day: (Like you need a reason to get out) June 1, 2023
Saturday is National Trails Day. Which, anymore, has become more the anchor for National Trails Day Weekend.  For the uninitiated, National Trails Day is the first Saturday of June, and has been for at least three decades. Sponsored by the American Hiking Society, it’s a chance for us to officially celebrate the trails — hiking, […]
  • Embrace, don’t fear, the summer stream crossing May 25, 2023
Editor’s Note: As summer rolls around and we find ourselves headed to the mountains for more challenging hikes, we often face the challenge of a stream crossing. Crossing’s cause anxiety for some hikers, but that needn’t be the case if you know how to approach them. Today’s post is a seasonal piece we repeat every few […]
  • A Weekend Trail Festival for the Great Dismal and Elizabeth City May 18, 2023
You likely can tick off all the great adventures you’ve had at the coast, in the Piedmont, in the mountains. But what about in the far northeast corner of the state, where perhaps the state’s most unique adventure challenge awaits — the Great Dismal Swamp. The Great Dismal is one of the few spots in […]
  • Warm weather hiking brings associated annoyances May 12, 2023
We’ve made the transfer from cool and budding to warm and lush. The weather is great for hiking, but there are some associated annoyances we face along the way, specifically ticks and mosquitoes,  and poison ivy.  Here’s a quick look at prevention and treatment for both. Ticks & mosquitoes Ticks and mosquitoes are being shown […]
  • YOTT Weekend Trail Festival’s Next Stop: Sanford May 5, 2023
It was the late 1990s when  got my first introduction to the Sanford outdoor scene. I was mountain biking more than anything else at the time and the Triangle had yet to develop it’s extensive network of trails (legal ones, at least). Lake Crabtree, Umstead, UNC North — that was about it. Then a friend […]
