Get Hiking with GetGoingNC and Great Outdoor Provision Co.

You could be enjoying this view this fall as part of the GetHiking! program.

Since I started GetGoingNC in 2009, I’ve mostly told you about ways you can stay fit and healthy.

Today, I’m adding a twist. When it comes to hiking, instead of telling, I’m going to start showing. I’m going to make you a map, meet you at the trailhead and start going out in the woods with you. read more

90 Second Escape: Getting There

Monday — never an easy time for the outdoors enthusiast. After a weekend of adventure, returning to the humdrum work-a-day world can make one melancholy. To help ease the transition, every Monday we feature a 90 Second Escape — essentially, a 90-second video or slide show of a place you’d probably rather be: a trail, a park, a greenway, a lake … anywhere as long as it’s not under a fluorescent bulb. read more

GetHiking! Corporate Wellness

If you’re interested in bringing all the wellness benefits of hiking to your workplace, we can help.

GetHiking! Corporate is an employer-sponsored program designed to get employees from behind their desks and into the outdoors.

“You did an amazing job with our group, with so much planning that went into it.  It was wonderfully executed. “

What’s the difference between walking a few times around the building at lunchtime and hiking for a couple hours on the weekend? Rather than rushing to get in those laps before you return to your desk, you’ll be challenging mind and body as you move on natural surface with more ups and downs, twists and turns. Rather than fretting about the email you need to send, you’ll be navigating trees and rocks, allowing your brain to shift focus and let the stress flow out of you. Hiking regularly you’ll be more relaxed, have more stamina, and be more ready than ever to tackle whatever challenges come your way. read more

Another pitch for the weekend

Looks like a hit, dry weekend over much of the state, with temperatures suitable for doing a raft of activities.

This weekend: Keep your cool

Dr. Mitchell was after in in the outdoors until the end, when he was in his early 60s.

If you’re looking to escape the weather this weekend, consider this: the forecasts for our three events in the mountains (Swannanoa), the Piedmont (Orange County) and at the coast (Wrightsville Beach) are this: High of 88, 20 to 30 percent chance of precipitation. Likely, it will be hot and a bit muggy wherever you go. Fortunately, we’ve found three events cool in both concept and execution. read more
